Magic point guard Anthony Mathis can shoot from deep. And his handle is sharp. He is a pass-first point guard with the Magic. At the next level Mathis will probably be an excellent leader of men.
Anthony Mathis Recruitment
Mathis was one of the feature guards last summer with Louisville Magic 16u. The team finished second place in the AAU Showcase in Louisville late July. Mathis was not getting many looks back then. Backcourt-mate David Sloan was grabbing offer after offer.
Good things come to those who wait. Now, Mathis is getting the coveted college attention.
Monday night Mathis’ father reported a half dozen schools of interest. Many of them are fresh.
“Cornell, Lehigh, Lipscomb, Wright State, Boston University, and IUPUI,” said Anthony Mathis Sr.
IUPUI is lead by Jason Gardner, a former college point guard for the Arizona Wildcats. Gardner has a strong affinity for intelligent lead guards like Mathis.
The high-academic route is becoming more and more popular among high school hoopers. Seth Towns and Chris Lewis picked Harvard over HM options. Yale landed a mid-major point guard in Eric Monroe and high major Jordan Bruner. The allure of Ivy League basketball has not been stronger since the early 1900’s.
Cornell is the first Ivy League participant to reach out to Mathis, but judging by his grades, academic pedigree they won’t be the last.
