“He started getting lots of mail and email after he took SAT’s,” said father and AAU Coach Rob Walker. “We turned around and engaged a lot of coaches and their staffs.
Cal Tech (DIII) is involved early. Perennial Division III power Williams College (MA) sent an email to the Walkers.
Their head coach sent an email this week. The contents of the email revealed that the junior Walker is one of many players Williams College will evaluate during this upcoming AAU cycle.
Other programs in the DII conference include Saint Anselm, Bentley, Franklin Pierce, and Le Moyne. In all there are 16 teams in the conference.
“Merrimack has agreed to see him play this spring or summer,” said Walker.
The model for the Walker family has been elite schools with good basketball in the northeast corridor. Coach Walker and his wife, Rachel, are New Jersey transplants. They have a deep respect for the lofty college prestige and deliverables found in the northeast, also.
The older sister of Reid Walker, Peyton is a college basketball player for Wofford. She was also recruited by Ivy League schools, such as Princeton and Penn.
“The packages on the women’s side were different than what I am hearing (regarding other recruits) on the men’s side,” said Coach Walker.
Early Ivy Interest
Of the Ivy’s, Cornell and Princeton are the most aggressive with Walker.
“I am supposed to call Princeton back today,” said Coach Walker. “Cornell has been in contact. Dartmouth, although I don’t think he is extremely high on their list.”
The Walkers have obviously been to Wofford (SC) for Peyton, but Reid’s recruitment took them on a visit to Stonehill last year (2015). By playing with the Tampa Titans AAU program, Reid will be evaluated by any college coach that makes Atlanta or Orlando an evaluation stop.
Walker had a strong season with Seffner Christian and managed to score over 14 ppg on a balanced team. Many of his high school teammates will compete throughout the summer together on the Tampa Titans.
The test scores caught the right eyes, now Reid Walker has to capitalize on his AAU visibility to snag those coveted offers.
Both Southeast Missouri and Florida-Gulf Coast have expressed preliminary interest, but pending evaluations those are truly introductory conversations.
“His big goal is he wants to go Ivy League,” said Coach Walker. “His dream school would be Harvard, but that is not in the spectrum judging by the way they recruit.”
The Northeast-10 joins the Ivy League as a preferred landing spot for the Walker family. Mere months separate the guard and his decision.
