The 6-foot point guard played with Team Breakdown 17U last season, and will play with that program again this spring and summer to try and augment his list of offers.
Bowling Green and Tennessee-Chattanooga are the first two which have offered the Rock High School point guard, many others are showing interest.
“The schools that are recruiting me the hardest are Creighton, Oklahoma, Murray State, and Florida Gulf Coast. And then I’ve been talking to Wake Forest a little bit. But the schools recruiting me the most are Creighton, and Oklahoma,” said Wheeler.
“I think Creighton is probably the closest to offering me, and Oklahoma recently came to the gym and watched me practice.”
Wheeler says his his immediate focus is to just keep working to improve his skillset before his ever-important 17U season arrives.
“Right now, I’m really just working on my game, so this summer I can go out there and really prove myself, and get more offers,” said Wheeler. “I’m happy with how things have gone, but I’m not satisfied, I’m going to keep working and keep those schools coming in and out.”
Wheeler mentioned to PHF what his strengths are as a player, and where it is he’d like to see the most improvement.
“My defense is my strength, and offensively I get my teammates open shots and I score when I have too. I get to the paint with ease, and this year I’ve been knocking down 3-pointers really good, just shooting the ball really good in general,” he said.
“When I’m coming off ball-screens I need to just pull-up for a mid range instead of kicking it down to the big man, I need to develop that shot.”
The talented point guard — PHF’s 13th ranked 2017 — transferred into Rock High School this season after playing with Sewanee in year’s past.
“I feel like this is the best league in the country, and the best competition,” said Wheeler. “At Suwannee I didn’t really have the competition to push me. But now I’m being pushed every night and it’s getting me ready for the next level.”
He added: “I’m the leader on the team, so I push us and keep us focused, things like that. I get teammates open, and I score the ball when they need me to score the ball.”
