Ponchatoula was in contention for a playoff spot in Class 5A for much of the season but a stretch of five losses in six games around the turn of the new year looks like it will come back to haunt them. The Wave (16-11, 7-6) would have to jump seven spots from No. 39 to 32 to qualify and have just one game left against Hammond, which has just three wins on the season.
Fortunately for the Wave, though, they’re sure to be back next year with the majority of their key players residing in the Class of 2017, two of which are guards Raymond McKay and Josh Doussan.
McKay runs the point for Ponchatoula and is the team’s leading scorer so far this season (12 of 27 games posted on MaxPreps) at around 13.2 points per game with 4.1 assists. The 5-foot-9, 140-pound guard is a good ball handler with a knack for finding crevices in the defense and I happened to be on-hand for his best game of the season.
The junior scored 27 points against St. Paul’s, who’s record currently stands at 28-1. The Wave had the lead for much of the game but eventually gave way to a bigger Wolves team down the stretch.
Doussan is Ponchatoula’s second-leading scorer at around 12.7 points per game with nearly four rebounds. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound guard is a good shooter from outside and usually finds a way to finish at the rim.
Here’s a look at what McKay and Doussan were able to do in three games on January 15 against St. Paul’s, January 19 against Fontainebleau and February 10 against St. Paul’s:
