The 6-foot-2 point guard played up two age levels with Florida Elite 16U, and after starting as an eighth-grader with Sarasota Christian, he’s now starting as a freshman with Cardinal Mooney.
“I don’t have anything too serious at this point. I’ve gotten contact from Virginia, a letter, and then Davidson too. Those are the only two right now. I got a letter from Virginia before the season, and Davidson I’ve heard contact from through AAU, ” said Whelton, who mentioned he’s mostly concerned with just getting better right now.

“I’m more worried to just keep getting better as a player, and as a student in the classroom. You never really see people commit their freshman year, it’s more junior and senior year. So I just got to work hard and make sure I’m ready for that opportunity my junior and senior year.”
Whelton described his style of play to PHF, siting that being a pass-first point guard is his strength right now, and shooting.
“I feel like my strength is the way I shoot the ball. And I also like to get others involved and when I get an open look I like to bury it. Just getting people involved at the beginning of the game, and then I reassess after the first quarter and see what my team needs from that point on,” said Whelton.
“I would say I need to improve the most with my quickness and athletically, also my vertical and just things like that.”
After starting last season as an eighth-grader with Sarasota Christian, he’s taken on the same role with the Cougars this season as a freshman.
“I came from Sarasota Christian where I started as an eighth grader. And I had a feeling I might start this season, but I was open to whatever the coaches needed of me. So if I wasn’t going to start I was ready to give valuable minutes off the bench,” said Whelton, whose main role is to distribute, and be versatile.
“They really want me to distribute the ball, we have some other really good players on my team, so I need to get them the ball and just score when I need to. They just need me to be versatile and understanding what the team needs from me that night.”
