Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Continuing our swing across the state with a look across the Fifth Region:
1. Adair County — Well-traveled coach Deron Breeze landed on his feet in Columbia: the Indians are 16-4 in his first season after a 12-19 finish last year. Adair County’s best wins are a trio outside Fifth Region play — conquests of Green County, Taylor County and Rockcastle County. Corey Melton (19.9 ppg), Cameron Lasley (16.9 ppg) and Chance Melton (15.5 ppg) are chief scorers for the Indians.
2. Green County — The Dragons, 11-18 last year, check in at 13-6 midway through the season. Green County owns no signature victories, but came close against Central Hardin (two losses, by three and four points, respectively) and lost by eight to Adair County on Dec. 5. Dominique Compton (29.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg) and Chad Emmons (10.6 ppg) carry the load for Green County.
3. Nelson County — The Cardinals stand 10-8 in late January after an 11-17 mark last winter. Among those wins are a pair of cathartic victories against Bethlehem, who ended Nelson County’s season in a one-point decision in the first round of the 19th District Tournament last year. Cameron Cornish (19.8 ppg), Max Ryan (15.2 ppg) and Bradley Watson (13.6 ppg) lead the Cardinals’ effort.
Honorable mention: Central Hardin (16-11 last season, 15-3 this year), Fort Knox (3-21 last season, 5-11 this year), Washington County (3-25 last season, 4-12 this year)
