Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Here’s a look across the Sixth Region:
1. North Bullitt — The Eagles, 16-12 last year, matched that win total in their first 18 games. Victories against Daviess County, Pleasure Ridge Park and Southern give North Bullitt some cachet. Ryan Henson (22.4 ppg), Jared Free (14.8 ppg) and Travis Dunnavan (12.8 ppg) lead the Eagles’ offense. North Bullitt and Bullitt East hook up Feb. 12 to potentially decide Sixth Region frontrunner status entering the postseason.
2. Valley — The Vikings have pioneered a 12-8 start after a 6-23 mark last year. That includes beatings of Beth Haven, Oldham County, Pulaski County and Southern. Eric George (15.9 ppg), Cameron Wilson (12.2 ppg) and Damont Walter (12.0 ppg) lead Valley’s offense.
3. Southern — The Trojans went 11-16 last season, then got off to an 11-9 beginning to this one. A victory over Pleasure Ridge Park is Southern’s best this season. A 24-point loss at Male on Jan. 26 revealed the Trojans still have some work to do, but another potential signpost game is Feb. 16 at Valley. Southern hasn’t reported complete individual stats to the KHSAA or to MaxPreps.
Honorable mention: Bullitt East (21-10 last season, 15-3 this year), Butler (6-19 last season, 8-8 this year), Iroquois (6-22 last season, 7-11 this year), Moore (8-18 last season, 6-8 this year)
