The 6-foot-4 wing picked up his first offer recently from from Florida International, and he’s seen some additional interest start to come his way.
“To be honest I needed to get offers, and I was putting up big numbers at Fivay but it just wasn’t getting me anywhere,” said Merrit.
“Now I have interest from Tennessee Tech, and then also Louisiana Tech, Nebraska, and North Carolina-Greensboro, and Longwood. I’ve talked with all of them, but only FIU has actually offered me, that was about a month ago,”
Merrit says he’s not too particular about where he goes, so long as his college is paid for.
“I’m just trying to go out there and do what I can to get an offer. I’m not a very picky person about where I go. I came up from nothing, so whatever school wanted to offer me and pay for my school I’m willing to go.”
With his new school, and surrounded by more talent, Merrit had to tweak his style of play a bit.
“Now that I’m at Oldsmar Christian I had to change a little bit of my style up,” he said. “My main strength is going to the basket and dunking it, I’m not much of a shooter right now, but I can get to the rim. And I’m a defensive person, that’s what I do with this team.”
He played center growing up, and has since gradually evolved into a wing, where he says he’ll likely play at the next level.
“I would have to say shooting and dribbling is what I need to improve right now. My coach has made my shot a lot better, he changed my form,” said Merrit. “And I’ve been doing a lot of dribbling drills, and that’s gotten a lot better too.”
