Currently PHF’s 25th ranked 2017, Riverview shooting guard AJ Caldwell may be due for a bump in the next installment.
After an outstanding sophomore campaign with the Rams, and a successful summer on the 16U grassroots circuit, the 6-foot-5 guard now boasts four Division I offers.
During his sophomore season Caldwell picked up his first offer from Virginia Tech, and has since picked up offers from North Florida, Vermont, and Iona.
“Some other schools that are interested in me are Texas Tech, William & Mary, Davidson, UCF, USF, Elon, Harvard, and Yale,” said the talented 2017.
“William & Mary is really interested in me, they haven’t offered me yet but I talk to their coach often, and then Davidson is another, I talk to their coach often too.”
Caldwell spent his offseason with E1T1 and Florida Suns, and mentioned that working to become more of a combo-guard was an area of emphasis.
“I tried to improve mostly on handling the ball better, I’m trying to become more of a point guard this year because I feel in college it would help me to be able to play the one and the two,” said Caldwell. “And I’m a pretty good shooter already but I continued to work on that. And defensively I’m trying to improve my lateral quickness so I can stay with smaller guards and stuff like that.”
The 6-foot-5 sharpshooter went on to define his style of play to PHF.
“I feel I’m a great shooter and I feel my IQ on the court is very high. I know what I’m going to do before I do it. I feel I’m ahead of the game, and I think my type of game is playing the right way and finding the open man, playing smart on defense, stuff like that,” he said.
“I think my overall athleticism and quickness needs to improve. Just getting stronger and quicker and faster.”
As Caldwell heads into his junior season with the Rams, he says he’ll be relied upon to score, and distribute this season.
“My role this year has changed a little bit,” he said. “Last year they relied on me for a lot of scoring, and this year I’ll still need to score a lot again, but I’ll also be looked at to find open people, and to be more of a leader too I think.”
