Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Woods looked strong as a secondary playmaker and off the ball shooting threat next to Freeman with the Wolfpack. When left open, he’s seemingly automatic from beyond the arc, and he’s very capable of making defenders pay when ran off the line. His mid-range game is strong and he had a few highlight worthy passes with “no looks” and other feeds. Footspeed and maximizing his lateral ability on the defensive end are one area of improvement when projecting him to the next level. But the size and shooting he brings as an off the ball guard, who can help create as a secondary threat make him a very appealing collegiate prospect.

The hopes of a deep playoff run likely lies with the leap that Woods could make as a junior. He’s a quality off the dribble shooter from deep, which will be needed after Catoosa replaces one of the top shooters in the state, Greyson Lewallen. The shooting ability of Woods will be crucial as he builds off his 8 points a game scoring average from last year. But he’s more than just a floor spacer, the junior has a good mix of a strong frame and a developing handle to be a quality playmaker off the dribble for himself and his teammates. Keeping an eye on how he continues to improve at creating for others and helps keep the free flowing Catoosa offense running will be a barometer for if the Indians are ready to make a State Tournament run.

Woods mixes his strong off the dribble shooting ability with sneaky playmaking. He plays at his own pace thanks to a stronger frame and good feel for the game. While he can make some good passing reads, he’s at his best when finding ways to get separation (often through stepbacks) for his own shot. Woods when paired with senior teammate Miller should create one of the better two-man games in Class 4A this year, as the Indians look to run and gun their way to a State Tournament appearance.

The junior year leap is a common production jump for players as they enter the final two years of high school. Woods looks to be a good candidate to make a strong jump this season. He’ll be stepping into a bigger scoring role for Catoosa, and the proficiency of his long range shooting will make him a big scoring piece to the fast paced Indians. Especially with the confidence he now has an off the dribble three point shooter. Anytime he got an opening, the shot was going up, and likely going in.

Woods is an Aggressive defender that loves to pressure the ball and get after it. Sutton prides himself on hustling harder than anyone else on the court. Every 50/50 ball has to be Woods and he takes great ownership in that. Sutton is also a good shooter and has a high IQ with finding the open teammate.

Suttons Woods is a pure scorer, the young shooting guard simply knows how to put the ball in the basket. Woods is a high priority for opposing defenses behind the arc because you simply cannot leave him open. Sutton is a threat to shoot the ball efficiently just a couple steps inside half-court, as soon as he finds a gap in the defense and gets his feet set its nearly automatic from deep. Woods lethal shooting ability makes him a solid treat to get to the rim as well with defenses overplaying him on the 3pt line, a simple pump fake and one dribble Sutton is finishing at the room with or without contact. A true highlight to his game and the passion with which he plays, is Sutton’s tenacity on the offensive boards especially on the fast break always putting himself in position for so valuable second chance points.
