Expert Analysis
Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
Avery, a junior guard out of Austin Prep in Massachusetts, is one of the top offensive performers in all of Class B and has the ability to take over games with his scoring. Austin Prep currently sits in 4th place in Class B with a 12-3 record in league games and a terrific young core of prospects. Avery is a microwave scorer when he gets going that can get to the rim off the bounce or score it in bunches from behind the arc. He’s got a strong and compact frame that allows him to play through contact around the basket and shows a good feel for the game as a decision-maker and creator. Defensively, he creates plenty of turnovers with both his lateral quickness and impressive instincts in passing lanes. Avery will be on scholarship watch this spring and summer as a member of the Class of 2027.

+12 (#64 to #52)
Avery, a guard out of Austin Preparatory School in Massachusetts, rose 12 spots in this update and now sits at #52 overall. Avery is a crafty ball-handler that has proven to be a big time shot maker that doesn’t shy away from the moment in big matchups. He’s got a powerful, compact build that allows him to play through contact, but also has good burst and quickness in tight spaces, allowing him to get by the initial defender off the bounce. He’s ultra competitive and does a great job of making winning plays on the defensive end of the floor.

Avery had an up and down first half against Rivers, but the 6-foot point guard erupted in the final 16 minutes offensively; he made a bunch of threes from well beyond the line on both step back moves and hesitation dribbles. He’s always balanced and ready to shoot, and he has some really nice stop-and-go dribble moves. Once he got to the paint, he showed off some pretty nice hang finishes with contact, using both his strong right hand and his southpaw to convert. Avery is only a junior but should be on the radar of D3 coaches because of his advanced skillset.

Avery, a combo guard out of Austin Prep in Massachusetts, is a high level scorer that plays with great aggression on the offensive end of the floor. He’s really good with the ball in his hands, but also impresses when he slides off the ball and operates as a catch and shoot shot maker. He’s got deep range on his jumper, a quick release, and does a nice job of elevating off the floor to get it off. He’s hard to guard in the open floor, where he uses his physical frame to play through bumps and finish through contact at the rim. Defensively, he has the ability to guard either back-court spot and moves well laterally, making dribble penetration difficult for opposing guards.
