Expert Analysis
Duvalier Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Marquilos is back, and this is his time to prove that his presence can swing a game. He has only started since the new year, and he’s been able to get back to being a scorer. He’s also shooting the ball at a high clip, and we know the kind of floor spacer that he can be. That will have to be on display, and he has to be surgical in their playoff game. He will have to be engaged and locked in on both ends of the floor, but they will need him to get back to dominating offensively. Vista Peak is up against a solid Centaurus team in Round 1. They will travel out there and hope that Mata looks like the top player on the floor.

He attacks the lane with confidence, finishing strong at the rim with either hand and showing impressive control through contact. His spin move is smooth, quick and perfectly timed to shake defenders and create scoring chances. What really rounds out his game is his vision. He sees the floor at a high level, reading defenses and delivering pinpoint passes that set up easy buckets for his teammates. He’s unselfish but knows when to take over, giving his team a spark whenever they need it. With his creativity, balance and feel for the game, Mata continues to prove why he’s one of the most exciting guards to watch

Mata has been a bright spot for Vista Peak, efficient from all three levels and proving to be the most consistent floor spacer for this group. One of the better shooters in this 2026 class, he is continuing to improve his effectiveness in spite of incoming contests, not fazed by tight pressure. Given this group’s willingness to play fast, he has not only worked to create easy looks in transition but provided this group with a safety valve in halfcourt once the going gets tough. Continuing to develop his mid-range shotmaking off the bounce, Mata remains a must follow.

Mata looks to be an impactful complementary shotmaker, knockdown off the catch. Bringing in good size within the backcourt, the guard will be another influential floor spacer within a Smoky Hill group looking to make noise yet again this upcoming postseason. His is still capable as a downhill scoring option, given the shooting gravity, drawing multiple fouls around the rim through this event.

Mata displayed repeated value spacing the floor, especially effective as a pull-up shooter. Stretching out to the three point line, the guard’s skill has drawn him plenty of gravity from distance. One of many talented shotmakers within Smoky Hill’s offense, the guard is certainly a rising name within the class.

Mata reaffirmed his smooth shotmaking touch behind the arc and within the mid-range. Effective leveraging his height to step into shots above the contest, the guard was knockdown from just about anywhere inside the arc. Defensively, the guard held his own when playing up against bigger guards, thanks to his wide reach.

Mata continues to develop his handle along the perimeter, continuing to grow as an off the dribble shotmaker. Bringing in a fairly high release complemented by his lanky frame, the guard is already a refined shotmaker off the bounce. Whether getting to pull-ups or step backs within the mid-range, he is well rounded to put it lightly.
