Expert Analysis
Robbie Hodin | Prep Hoops Scout
Farrell was a steadying force all year for Masco, and he played his best basketball towards the end of the season, so he deserves a spot on the first team. The 6-foot-2 scoring guard is unbelievable in the mid-range and consistently gets to his spots at the elbow via a quick first step, but he can also finish at the rim more effectively than many guards in the MIAA. When multiple defenders converge on him, he’s shown that he can make smart kick out passes to teammates, and I also think he’s an underrated defender and athlete. Farrell should get looks at the high D3 level—his game will translate wonderfully there.

Farrell, a senior out of Masconomet, made a monumental impact on the court this winter while leading his team to a birth in the Division 2 state championship game. A consumate floor general, Farrell was another player that was at his best in the biggest moments, scoring 26 points in a road contest at St. Mary’s and hitting the game-winning jumper in the state semifinal. He made the game easier for his teammates on the offensive end of the floor, didn’t shy away from tough defensive assignments, and helped Masconomet win a lot of basketball games this winter. He played with great poise as a ball-handler, was one of the better mid-range scorers in the state, and wanted the ball in his hands in crunch time.

Farrell almost put Masco on his back and carried his team to a finals’ win. He was lethal in the mid range (as always), but he also did a great job getting to the rim and finishing with contact—he had numerous and-ones and was living in the paint all day. Farrell missed a potential game-winner, but he kept Masco in the game for a long time and was a total stud for them this season. He’s going to be looked at by high level D3 programs, and his game is going to translate very well to the next level, though the uptick in talent will be jarring at the beginning as a result of coming from the MIAA. Bright future ahead for Farrell and an excellent high school career in the books.

Farrell, who I’ve called the best mid-range shooter in the MIAA, excelled in exactly that way during the semifinals. The 6-foot-2 guard consistently got to his spots around the free throw line and balanced himself before rising above the defense and hitting shots. He’s a lot more athletic than people think, and he shows that when he drives to the rim or protects the hoop defensively, which he does well for his size. I’m not sure where Farrell will end up next year, but high level D3’s should certainly be interested—perhaps a post-grad year could raise his stock a bit more.

is the best pull-up jump shooter in division 2, and it isn’t particularly close. The 6-foot-2 guard does a great job using his first step to get by his defender, and then he simply picks a spot on the floor to get to and elevate at. He’s a knock down shooter in these situations and looks ridiculously comfortable. Farrell also does an amazing job finishing with contact and is a big game player, which is important for the state tournament.

Farrell, a guard out of Masconomet Regional High School in Massachusetts, has proven to be one of the best two-way guards in the MIAA over the last two winters. First and foremost, he’s helped his team win a lot of basketball games, showing an understanding of how to impact games outside of just scoring. The 6’2″ guard can operate as a creator with the ball in his hands, makes good reads as a passer in the half-court, and has the ability to get to the rim off the bounce. He scores it at the rim in transition and can knock down threes either off the bounce or in catch and shoot situations. Defensively, he’s competitive on that end of the floor and has the strength/toughness combo needed to guard any spot on the perimeter. Farrell has all the makings of a high level guard at the Division III level and should have plenty of suitors at this point in the year.

Farrell was pretty easily Marco’s best player last night. After going down 17-3 after the first quarter, it was the senior guard’s offensive punch that allowed them to get back into the game. He has an incredible knack for getting to his spots in the mid range and elevating over the defense for jumpers, and he also takes contact very well at the rim. He also does a great job finding teammates when the defense collapses on him in the paint—he made multiple impressive weak-side reads to find cutters for layups. Farrell is a high D3 player in my opinion, and some more explosive dribble moves going left would really take his game to the next level.

Farrell is a super strong combo guard who can score from all three levels and doesn’t really have an offensive weakness. He averaged 18.6 points per game last year for a talented Masconomet Regional team that has some other really solid players. He shoots it well from three, he has some really nice footwork for turnaround middies and pull ups in the mid range, and he has a strong body for drives to the rim. When you take something away from him offensively, he has the IQ and skillset to lean on other parts of his game, like facilitating. Farrell will be one of the better players and higher scorers in the MIAA this year.

Farrell, a scoring guard at Masconomet Regional, makes his first appearance in the rankings after a strong junior season in Massachusetts. A score first guard with the ability to make plays for others off the bounce, he does a really good job of moving without the basketball and using screens to get open. When he has the ball in his hands, he leverages his shooting to open up driving lanes, taking advantage of shot and pass fakes, as well as hesitations, to create space to get into his jumper. Defensively, he competes on and off the ball and shows a high basketball IQ in the help side.
