Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Against Auburn, Stephens looked strong, explosive, and was a serious threat in transition. Whether he’s filling lanes or running the break himself, his size, speed, creativity and strength make him a tough guy to stop when he has a head full of steam and some space. He also continued to show a good defensive work rate as well as some touch around the paint.

Prev Rank: 79 (+26)rnStephens was new to the varsity squad at Tahoma last season and he showed a lot of flashes of the ability to be a high-level two-way wing. But after watching him this spring it seems like those flashes have become the norm. He has great burst to jump passing lanes on defense, take it down the other way and finish with authority. He’s shown better consistency with the jumper, specifically working out of the mid-range and incorporating a good pullup. But he’s also continued to make plays for others and has real potential to develop as a passer as the summer goes on.

Jayden “Jam Sandwich” Stephens
Stephens gets the nickname “Jam Sandwich” because he was making plays on both ends of the floor, jumping passing lanes with his length and athleticism, hitting jumpers from the elbow when defenders backed off, and in between it all he showed some flavor on the court with a big jam in transition. He’s a first-year varsity player that has flashed big potential for the Bears this season. He’s got serious two-way potential and continues to build on his skills on both ends of the floor.

Stephens is still just cracking the surface of his game, but early on in his first varsity season he has shown unique vision with the ball and an aggressive attacking mindset. There is a little bit of consistency missing right now but as he plays more that should get fixed. He’s got a good-looking jumper that is pretty reliable from mid-range, he’s strong at the hoop, and can fit passes into some tight windows. Given some time, Stephens could blossom into a solid all-around wing with plus playmaking potential.

There is a lot of change at Tahoma this season, but Stephens is one of the new starters who looks like a big piece for them. He is tall, plays strong with the ball and could be a player the Bears look to to make energy plays felt by the rest of the team. There were a few mistakes throwing errant passes or dribbling into bad spots, but with more time on the court, Stephens could be a big stock riser this season.

This kid was tough in the paint. He showed off some great skills in the post. He played well with his back to the basket, including some nice footwork, using pivots to free himself up for layups. He is a strong kid with a big frame. He has the talent to be a really good player in the next two years for Tahoma.
