Expert Analysis
William Lloyd III | Prep Hoops Scout
Jalen showed the ability to score at all three levels while maintaining constant pressure on the defense for Largo in his final MPSSAA run. Jalen consistently broke down defenders off the dribble, blowing by his matchup and finishing in the lane with either hand. His aggressiveness stood out, as he repeatedly attacked the rim and forced fouls and outmuscled defenders for layups. His combination of downhill explosiveness and scoring versatility made him one of the toughest covers throughout Largo’s playoff run.

-Johnson was honored for scoring his 1,000th point before the game and kept that momentum rolling throughout the contest. Johnson hit a face up 3 from the wing to start game, raced back in transition to make up for a turnover to block a shot, logged a nice assist from halfcourt to his teammate at the rim for the 2-handed dunk, and crossed the paint to block a shot before racing it up court to draw the foul. Johnson closed out the game with a series of different finishes with a spin move lay off the window, drive and spin back left in transition to get to his strong hand to finish the and1 bucket through the contact at the rim, drove and hit an extension layup high off the window, and knocked down his FTs (9/12). His constant rim pressure and physical POA defense really set the tone in the home win for Largo, will be interesting to see which of the scholarship offers he will take as he rounds the home stretch of his senior year.

Heading into this season, Johnson was looked to fill a large portion of the unfillable void left behind by Cam Ward (Michigan State). The 6-foot-2 lead guard had a couple of quiet games to his standard in the early goings, but has since put together stat-stuffing performances that are expected to be routine as the senior leader. The Lions have talent evenly dispersed throughout their rotation and now putting the puzzle together within the chemistry department will determine their ceiling. As for Johnson, he’s a crafty scoring guard who can break his man down off the bounce or operate with pace in ball screens. In transition, he poses as an above-the-rim guy with a clear launching pad and every now and again, will deliver a high-level dime off the live dribble to a cutting teammate or shooter spotting up on the weak side of the floor.

Helping fill the sizable shoes of PG County’s all-time leading scorer in Cam Ward (now at Michigan State), Johnson has been called upon to step up significantly after years as a valued secondary option. He’s answered the bell nicely thus far, leading the Lions so far this season with his hard-charging downhill style. Johnson is consistently a problem for opposing defenses to keep in front with a blend of physicality, ball skills, and a quick first step that he uses to attack the basket with impunity. He shows that he can keep things honest with his feet set from beyond the arc and really thrives with his ability to play passing lanes before getting into transition for highlight finishes. While a bit unrefined for the D1 level, Johnson’s productivity and motor make him a nice scholarship-level option late in the cycle, with D2s, JUCOs, and prep schools all highly likely to benefit from his services.

Jalen combines size, strength, and athleticism to impact both ends. He is a versatile scorer, able to pass, dribble, and finish at all levels, excelling when attacking the basket. Defensively, he brings energy, forces turnovers, and rebounds well on both sides. Improving his off hand will further round out his game. He handles the ball confidently, excels in transition, is active on the boards, and shows coachability and a positive attitude.

Johnson enters his senior season with momentum coming off last year’s state title run led by current Michigan State freshman Cam Ward. The 6-foot-2 southpaw combo guard brings tremendous toughness as a slasher who can finish through contact on drives to the rim. In space, his athleticism emerges in the form of one-handed throwdowns and if he’s left open on the catch from beyond the arc, he can make the defense pay with a cool, confident trigger. While the void left behind by Ward will be impossible to fill, Largo’s success should be a direct reflection on the play that head coach Rodney Ward gets from Johnson.

Jalen did well showing his versatility as a scorer this summer. I feel that making the transition to the Washington Warriors helped Jalen improve his off-ball ability. He got to showcase his skillset in the scoring department, which he took full advantage of. Jalen got to the cup consistently finishing tough layups and and-1’s. Catching the ball from the wing opened up Jalen’s opportunities to operate one-on-one. He showed his improvement with his shot off-the-dribble.

Jalen was impressive as an off-guard watching him run alongside D Bivins in the backcourt. He knew where he could be most effective and found those spots well. He was the perfect 2-guard, making timely cuts and finishing multiple traffic layups. Jalen rarely forced up any shots and took advantage of his looks at the basket, scoring more then not. Mixed in some shooting over the weekend as well, overall a very solid game for Johnson in a different sort of role.

-Overcame a tough first half that saw him smoke a few bunnies around the rim before he really locked in to dominate the game in the 2H and in overtime. Johnson uses his shoulder well to create space on drives to the rim and has phenomenal back foot burst to really turn on the jets and turn the corner on his defender on his way to the rim. Impressed by his rebounding ability as a guard and his willingness to block out bigs at either end whether he is chipping or he is his individual matchup under the rim. His blend of explosive and physical play makes him a really difficult guard to stay in front of.

-First time seeing Johnson this year and he did not disappoint, imposing his will with extremely physical play at both ends of the floor. It’s not often that you see a point guard rotate over from the weak side for a block but he punched a layup attempt, gathered the rebound, and had the awareness to hit a teammate at the opposite end with a perfect baseball pass from inside the paint. Liked the diversity in his shot diet throughout the contest as Johnson scored off of back cuts, hit leaning floaters off glass, hit a smooth double crossover before getting into a one-leg floater that the defense never had a chance of block, and bulldozed his way to the rim to finish with the flourish over the defender. The play-making and vision stood out throughout the contest with Johnson executing a diagonal dime through the zone press to the shooter, getting two feet in the paint to kick to shooters, and keeping his head up on a lift to catch the BLOB pass at the top of the key before immediately rocketing in an overhead chest pass to Ward on the low block for the easy hook shot. Johnson put a nice bow on the performance with a long rebound and made FTs to clinch the win for Largo
