Varney proved his value to Severance all season long, especially early when he stepped up without their star and found ways to win. As the year progressed, he settled into a dangerous second option, bringing a physical presence down low while also attacking the rim and getting to his spots effectively. Averaging 14.8 points and 4.8 rebounds, he consistently produced and made winning plays. His ability to adapt, embrace different roles,l and impact the game with toughness and scoring is a big reason his stock continues to rise. He also showed improved confidence late, stepping up in key moments and delivering when his team needed him most

Varney was very impressive with his versatility and high basketball IQ. He’s a dependable scorer who can hurt defenses from anywhere on the floor. He has great ability to knock down shots from deep or finish strong inside. His range stretches the defense, opening up space for his teammates to operate. He is a great rebounder for a guard and on the glass he’s active and physical, consistently battling for boards on both ends. He makes smart passes, reads the floor well and always seems to make the right play in the right moment. A true all around threat, Varney’s complete skill set and consistency have him steadily rising in the rankings

Varney vaulted up the rankings after a breakout season. He averaged 11.9 points and 4.1 rebounds as a 6’0 guard who led Severance’s balanced offensive attack. He has a high motor, and is a floor leader that reads the game well and knows when to be aggressive. He was the guy opposing teams game planned for and he still found a way to get it going. He’ll be expected to expand his game as a playmaker this year, but with his work ethic and IQ, don’t be surprised if he levels up again. He rises in our rankings and has a year we’re excited about.

Varney has taken on a large role over at Severance, handling plenty of shooting volume from distance, heating up of recently. Up at 39% from distance in his last four games, alongside 14+ points in each of those matchups, the guard is propelling this 11-5 group at all times. Currently 8-1 in league play, this group has found their stride, currently on a six game win streak. Although still getting back in stride with his scoring, his defensive activity has made him a net positive for them all season.

Varney competes about as hard as anyone in this class, beinring a relentless motor as a handsy point of attack defender or willing help defender. Always working to impact open space in the help side, he does well stunting drives or leaping into passing lanes to create the steal. Garnering plenty of opportunity at Severance from his defensive mindset alone, Varney now has opportunities to progress as a three point shooter, although he showed he could heat up for multiple threes in a quarter when necessary this summer with NoCo Elite.

Varney competes on both ends, highly active without the ball. Effective getting around screens to contest opposing ball handlers, he fights around opponents constantly. Another area where Varney shines is transition, getting out quickly to receive potential outlet passes.

Varney was a good inside out player for his team as he was able to get it going in the paint. He was also able to make the defense pay a couple of times from behind the arc. He was able to get some tough finishes in the paint with some good touch, making contested layup in transition. He was able to hit a couple 3’s when his team needed it and had a good all around game.
