Young is a player who continues to impress and get better every time he’s on the floor. Last year, he really showed out at the Toledo Top 64 and turned a lot of heads with his performance. I’m excited to see what he’s been working on since then. He’s a skilled scoring guard who can hurt you at all three levels, and his confidence makes him a tough guard in any situation.

I was surprised when Young III received his first Division I offer in August from IU Indy because I hadn’t seen him since June. When I next caught Young III at the Toledo Top 64 and then in Toledo Whitmer’s season opener against Reynoldsburg, I understood why a Horizon League program would be aggressive in pursuing Young III early. Due to his offensive improvements with slashing and perimeter shooting, Young III is one of the biggest stock risers in this update. Where Young III has always stood out is defensively as he’s one of the best perimeter defenders in the state of Ohio. Few players can shut down elite opposing guards on the ball like Young III can.

Young is a player I expect to have a big impact on this Whitmer Panthers team. I think he will have a huge impact on winning for them. He has a nice size and length for a guard with the athleticism to match this. He is good at getting the ball with some momentum and letting it carry him to the rim. He is a nice defender as well. One a Panthers team that will be trying to speed other teams up he will be vital in that. Young also added a nice jumper to his game this summer. This could make Young a real problem this year for other teams to guard.

Young is coming off a good sophomore season for the Panthers and seems to have made that leap you want to go into his junior year. He looks like a much more confident and skilled player. He has a good athletic and finishing ability at the rim that is hard to defend. He played his tail off as well. He has great stamina and effort every quarter he played in. Loved seeing that.

Young made a huge improvement to his game and it has opened him up to be a really good player. He has gained a good confidence in his jumper because it goes in consistently now. He used to be hot and cold with his jumper but he showed it off on Sunday. He was hitting shots off the dribble and off balance. He was hitting spot-up jumpers. He was already a great defender and slasher but he is now a real scoring threat for Whitmer.

Defensively, there’s few players in Ohio who can match what Young brings from a defensive standpoint. Elite on the ball activity, Young does an excellent job of pressuring the ball and waiting to make his steal attempt without fouling. Playing next to a pair of Division I talents in the back-court at Whitmer meant he had to take a smaller role last winter as a scorer, but he showed me some impressive perimeter shot making and wiggle with the ball in his hands. I expect Young to be a breakout player in northwest Ohio and Whitmer could make another push towards Dayton with their three headed monster on the perimeter.

Young is someone who received his first offer this past summer and someone who had good momentum last year to end the high school season. He showed to be able to put it all together and be an elite role player on a state final four team last year as a freshman. Young has great size for the guard. He is a good athlete with some sneaky length. He showed some great defensive skillset and effort. He can lock up most of any guards. He is someone that learning how to score at the high school level but is showing good promise with his finishing ability.

A nice complimentary piece on a Toledo Whitmer squad that made it to the state semifinals in Division I, Young was a player who seemed to get better as the year went on. I was really impressed with the perimeter defense of Young during their playoff run. I also think Young will eventually get the opportunity to showcase more of his offensive skill either as a Junior or a Senior. If Young stays patient and continues to impact the game defensively, he’ll make himself an attractive college prospect.

A lot gets talked about with Whitmer’s back-court that features a pair of Juniors with Division I offers. While they were key in the win over Garfield Heights, I was also impressed with what Young III showed on Saturday. Defensively, I thought Young did a great job as the Panthers took turns switching and taking on the tough assignments of staying in front of the quick and talented Bulldog guards. I was also impressed offensively with how Young picked his spots to attack offensively. He’s still deferring to some of the more experienced guys on his team, but Young shows a lot of potential on the offensive end. I’ll be curious to see his progression during the grassroots season. Whitmer is moving on because of the depth of talent that they have, getting production from their role guys in key moments. The final play of the game defined the effort Whitmer gave all game.

A newer name for myself, Young got the start and played with a lot of confidence. Against tons of pressure from Sandusky and a crazy environment, you can’t back down from traps and Young took advantage. Splitting double teams, making euro steps for layups and moving without the ball, Young was a nice boost for Whitmer. A name to track over the next few years.
