Alvarez was one of the other Mauldin Mavs who had a solid performance against J.L. Mann. He really capitalized on the Patriots’ lack of a big man, hauling in four offensive rebounds and turning all of them into second-chance points. Smith also showed some impressive things with the ball in his hands outside of the paint, like a desire to run the floor in transition, a 12-foot post fadeaway, tons of one-on-one touches on the wing, and two important free throws late in regulation. Alvarez finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

, a new name in the most recent Prep Hoops SC 2026 Rankings, leads off my next list of Standouts from the Phenom Summer Havoc. This was my first chance to see Smith this summer since he was sick during the Sizzlin’ Summer Shootout in June. As usual, Alvarez’s work rate and defensive versatility really impressed. His jump shot also looked very confident, which was a new improvement in his game. Smith was effective off the catch from the perimeter and on mid-range pull-ups, putting up 11 Points. He is capable of guarding 2-5 on the defensive end at this level and made some impact plays with 2 Blocks and 2 Steals in the Carolina Celtics’ win over NC Invasion in the 17U Division.

is the other half of the Mavericks’ dynamic duo. He is an aggressive young wing that defends at finishes at a high level. Alvarez is capable of defending multiple positions and was forced into doing so in Mauldin’s second-round matchup with River Bluff on Saturday. He also rebounds very well for his size, something that was even true as a Freshman last season. Several of his 16 points came off offensive rebounds as the Mavericks picked up the home playoff win.
