The Braves have a chance in the loaded Columbus City League north division because he is one of those don’t quit kids. Coming off a struggling season, he is a bright spot that the school can rally around while trying to get victories.
“We can be down 20-30 and he’ll still be playing as hard as the beginning of the game,” assistant Varsity and head Junior Varsity coach Clyde Johnson says. “If you don’t want it, he does.”
Caleb Brigle averaged just over 17 points per game last season, which was 4th in the north division of the Columbus City League. He had a season-high 39 points against the Centennial Stars, a game in which the next highest scorer on his team had 10 points.
Brigle is a close to six-foot guard who can light it up. He can stretch the floor with his shooting ability while finishing at the rim with either hand. A kid that could put on more weight so he can defend bigger guards better, he has long arms and quick hands that make up for his lack of strength. A quick thinking young man who’s passing skill is pretty good and will get better with time. Also, according to his coaches, he is as competitive as any player in a league full of high level competitors.
Along with Brigle, the Braves will also bring back Zach Casto, Ivan Twitty, Alex Hurd and Demeraus Warfield. Hurd and Warfield will serve as the size for this team, the 6-foot-3 tandem will have their work cut out for them (terrible cliche alert) trying to guard the big men in the Columbus City League north. They will need to protect the paint on defense and rebound, give this team easy opportunities in transition.
Casto and Twitty seem to be locked in as the other starters. The 6-foot-1 Casto and 5-foot-11 Twitty will provide extra scoring outside of Brigle, with one of these young men hopefully becoming a consistent second scorer. They combined to average well over 7 points combined per game, but with the attention that will be paid to their star, they will have increased production this season.
This team will progress in the 2020-2021 season, one reason is because there are not many other options but another is they will have chemistry and one of the best scorers in the entire Columbus City League. The interesting part will be seeing if this team can put it together and become the team that spoils other team’s season.
