Continue ReadingMinnesota’s 2020 class is arguably the deepest group of players to come around over the past few seasons, and is loaded with under-the-radar point guard prospects that can contribute at the next level. We list off seven of the best senior PG’s ranked outside of the top-125 in the class of 2020.
Lovell Williams Lovell Williams 6'2" | PG Maple Grove | 2020 State MN (6’1 2020 PG, Maple Grove)- In his first year seeing serious playing time at the varsity level, Lovell Williams Lovell Williams 6'2" | PG Maple Grove | 2020 State MN made a name for himself as a college prospect. MIAC schools should be all over this kid as a point guard, as he’s so fundamentally sound and versatile. He averaged 16 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3 steals per game as an absolute stat stuffer. Lovell is such a smooth player attacking the basket, and does a great job of reading defenders’ bodies to know when to blow by or when to step back for a jumper. He has great hands to poke balls free on defense, and proved he can play with some of the state’s best, commonly having his best performances against tougher competition.
Shaheed Muhammad Shaheed Muhammad 5'11" | PG North St. Paul | 2020 State MN (5’11 2020 PG, North St. Paul)- Over the past few seasons North St. Paul always seems to have a high scoring senior, and this year Shaheed Muhammad Shaheed Muhammad 5'11" | PG North St. Paul | 2020 State MN took over that role. A small but shifty guard, Shaheed is one of the toughest players in the Metro to stay in front of, as he has a large arsenal of dribble moves to create space. Shaheed was named conference MVP after leading his team to a 15-1 conference record, scoring 18.6 ppg. The shifty guard is a sharpshooter from deep who can weave through defenders and pick out the open pass off of penetration. His 37 point game against Minnehaha Academy early in the season was one of the top individual performances I saw all year.
Isaac Burns Isaac Burns 6'1" | PG Fridley | 2020 State MN (6’ 2020 PG, Fridley)- A rocket in a bottle, Isaac Burns Isaac Burns 6'1" | PG Fridley | 2020 State MN can accelerate in a hurry and get up the floor to score in transition. An extremely fast point guard with long arms and a tight handle, Isaac scored 15 ppg as a senior while consistently stuffing the box score with rebounds, assists, and steals. Isaac is at his best attacking the basket in the half court or forcing turnovers and running out in transition. A solid outside shooter as well, Isaac is can hurt defenders who go under screens with his ability to pull-up from three off the dribble.
Josh Kamara Josh Kamara 6'0" | PG Lakeville North | 2020 State MN (6’ 2020 PG, Lakeville North)- Josh doesn’t boast the statistical outputs that some of the others on this list do, but he is a fundamentally sound point guard with a solid build and quickness. Kamara was just about the only returning piece from last year’s state runner-up team, and he brought a veteran presence to an inexperienced lineup, helping lead them to a 15-11 record. Josh is a dangerous player attacking the basket off the dribble, with a unique ability to contort his body and finish at the rim. That ability to penetrate the defense combines with the vision to pick out an open man after he draws in the help defense. He scored 12 a game for a balance Lakeville North team.
Jaylen Blakley (5’8 2020 PG, Minneapolis South)- Though undersized, Jaylen was one of the top players in the Minneapolis City Conference this season. Jaylen averaged 12.7 ppg, and though I couldn’t find any assist numbers, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was among the top 2-3 in the conference. Jaylen is a shifty guard with great change of pace and direction, and is one of the best passers I saw this year. He does a great job of keeping his head up when attacking, and is able to use a variety of no look passes to find his teammates off of penetration. A great ball handler who can rack up assists on offense, and make things difficult for opposing ball handlers defensively.
Jordan Jones Jordan Jones 5'10" | PG Columbia Heights | 2020 State MN (5’9 2020 PG, Columbia Heights)- Jordan Jones Jordan Jones 5'10" | PG Columbia Heights | 2020 State MN had a solid junior season, but he elevated his game to new heights as a senior. A shifty ball handler who can create separation with ease on the perimeter, Jordan’s deep range from three allows him to put up points in a hurry. He averaged 23.3 ppg this season, scoring 34.5 a game in the playoffs. He also chipped in 2 assists and 2.4 steals a game, while shooting 38% from beyond the arc. Despite his smaller size, he’s able to penetrate the lane and get off floaters to score over height. One of the biggest stock-risers in the metro area this winter.
Andrew Irvin Andrew Irvin 5'10" | PG DeLaSalle | 2020 State MN (5’10 2020 PG, DeLaSalle)- DeLaSalle is known as a program that plays with intensity on defense, and Andrew Irvin Andrew Irvin 5'10" | PG DeLaSalle | 2020 State MN embodies that reputation. One of the best defenders I saw this year, Andrew can take an opposing player completely out of the game. He sits deep in a stance and gets right up on his man, using effort and quick hands to force a lot of loose balls. Offensively he is a reliable ball handler who makes smart decisions passing the ball, and doesn’t force any bad shots. Though he doesn’t take many threes, he has a solid mid-range jumper and can finish around the rim. He scored 5.5 ppg for one of the state’s top teams, and can contribute at the next level as a ball handler and great defender.
