The lower division matchups usually see some great team play, led by strong team chemistry and camaraderie, however there were some good individual showings Saturday as some players saw their seasons end, while others will live to play another day. Here are the 6 top performers from District action at Northmont and Butler High School.
Cameron Harrison (2021) National Trail- The Blazers point guard played phenomenal against a very good Anna team. The junior guard impressed with his quick trigger off the dribble drive and had a very high release which allowed him to get shots off over taller defenders. Harrison impressed against pressure from the Rockets which are guard oriented and played hard in the game. The junior has a high ceiling.
Zach Woodall (2020) National Trail- Woodall has extremely nice handles for a forward. Patient on both the block and the perimeter, he waits for appropriate times to attack or shoot the basketball. Has a high IQ and knows how to use his length in the low block. Most impressive to me was the numerous ways he can score. Played with a high motor and showed some emotion in a loss.
Riley Huelskamp (2020) Anna- In the past we’ve seen Huelskamp as more of a defensive menace for the Rockets. In a win against National Trail, he impressed with a more aggressive attitude on the perimeter. The senior guard was shifty around the rim finding ways to beat defenders and score in the paint. Was willing to shoot with either hands and was finishing at a high level against bigger defenders. Matches his defensive tenacity on the offensive end of the floor and contributes as a secondary scoring option.
Steve Gentry Jr. (2020) Deer Park- Deer Park’s starting point guard played an incredible game against a Milton-Union team that could not match his athleticism. The lefty is lightning quick, getting down hill quickly and hitting the second level after initially beating his man off the dribble. Found ways to get in transition and made the tempo more fast paced. His speed at the second level allowed him to find the paint consistently after the initial breakdown.
Blake Brumbaugh (2023) Milton-Union- Of the guys on this list, Brumbaugh was the new name I learned. The freshman seemed to be the only guy for the Bulldogs playing with any passion or tenacity. He has a nice feel for the game, tries to pass the ball where teammates will be vs. right to them. High IQ and looks to create scoring opportunities for teammates. My early concern is he found himself in foul trouble on some silly fouls in the 2nd half. Regardless though, I like his upside and think he could be a special player in the SWBL.
Trevon Ellis Trevon Ellis 6'3" | PG Stivers | 2020 State OH (2020) Stivers- The senior guard again showed his quick instincts and his ability to make a play with his passing or shooting. He distributes the ball quickly and effectively. Always has his head on a swivel and trying to advance the ball in transition. Created scoring opportunities for himself off the drive with Rayvon Griffith Rayvon Griffith 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #78 Nation AZ (2023) defending him. The guy could legitimately be a D2 target with his size and skillset.
