Prospect Spotlight: Cam Whitmore (2022)
After missing his entire freshman year due to injury, Cam Whitmore is back healthy and contributing to a young, but good Archbishop Spalding team. The 6-foot-6 210-pound forward, who hit a growth spurt over the summer, is one of five sophomores who feature regularly for Cavaliers Head Coach Josh Pratt. Whitmore and his teammates combine to form one of the best young cores in the area.
“My role is always to try to score, try to get my teammates open, and pick up my teammates,” Whitmore told Prep Hoops during a recent interview. “If everyone plays together, I think we can win a championship.”
Last night, Spalding went on the road and knocked off a red-hot Mt. St. Joseph team, a win which adds to their impressive resume this season. Whitmore double-doubled, scoring 16 points, but also adding 12 boards and 3 blocks, while his classmates Tyheil Peterson, CJ Scott, and Jordan Pennick also put up big numbers.
Whitmore recalls being a two-sport athlete when he was younger, playing both football and basketball before taking the ladder more seriously. He is an explosive, fluid athlete with a good blend of size and skill. Whitmore says his jump shot, which looks quite good, is one of the most improved parts of his overall game.
“My dad bought a hoop outside, so I started working on it,” he said. “I try to work on it every day after school.”
Shooting off the dribble is one attribute that Whitmore says he is focused on improving. For now, he is focused on attacking the basket, rebounding and trying to get his teammates open. Similar to his role model, Russell Westbrook.
“I like his attitude,” Whitmore said of Westbrook. “I like how he’s always attacking the basket. He tries to step on people’s necks, and dunk on people.”
We got a good look at this Spalding team, which showed plenty of character during a recent road win at Potomac School, and it’s clear they have a good chance to win now and in the future. Whitmore’s contributions cannot be ignored when considering their potential success.
