“I know we couldn’t stop [Jordan Thompson],” Lawton coach Eric Wiley said, “but we had to contain him.
“That’s the game plan we came in with, and we shot the ball better tonight,” Wiley added.
Lawton’s four-headed dragon that included Sep Reece, Jamel Graves, Ashawnti Hunter and Laquon Williams combined for 47 points for the Wolverines, prompting Lawton to a victory. Meanwhile, the SaberCats’ Thompson and Sam Godwin had 49.
The most impressive players from the match will be briefed below:
Sam Godwin | 2020 PF | Southmoore
You know exactly the type of performance you’re getting on a night-in, night-out basis with Southmoore post Sam Godwin, who connected on four dunks, a 3-pointer and finished with 24 points Friday evening. He had a highlight-reel night for the SaberCats, but even his big play was not enough to lift Southmoore to victory.
Jamel Graves | 2022 W | Lawton
A rising sophomore prospect, Jamel Graves boosted his stock Friday evening behind an outstanding, efficient performance to lead Lawton to victory. Graves scored 12 points on a second-and-third-quarter run that helped boost the Wolverines in a pivotal period of the game. At 6-foot-6-inches, Graves could be one of the best prospects in the state in the sophomore class.
Sep Reece | 2020 SG | Lawton
Sep Reece topped the Wolverines’ scoring margin with 14 points Friday night with a fiery mid-range game and a proclivity to find open spots on the floor. He stands 6-foot-even and could turn-out to be a hot commodity for college coaches by the State Tournament.
Jordan Thompson | 2020 PG | Southmoore
Jordan Thompson had a very Thompson-esque performance Friday night, leaving the court with 25 hard-earned points from the 3-point line, charity stripe and paint. Thompson, if he had any, left his doubters stumbling over their words.
Ashawnti Hunter | 2020 C | Lawton
Ashanti Hunter, a 6-foot-6-inch post, may have been the Wolverines’ most valuable two-way player as he protected the rim, grabbed rebounds and scored 10 points. Though he was not the tallest player on the floor, Hunter did not play as somebody trying to compensate for a couple inches behind his opponent; he exploded from his stance to block shots and put the ball in the hoop.
Laquon Williams | 2020 PF | Lawton
With the help of Hunter, Laquon Williams further muddied the inside game for the SaberCats and was, perhaps, the most versatile player on the floor offensively; he even netted a pair of 3-pointers from the corner in the Wolverines’ win.
After the upset victory, the Lawton Wolverines will be the eye of much state-wide attention, and that is exactly how they wanted it, Wiley said.
“Tonight, we were focused,” Wiley said, “I pray we just go out there and compete and execute.
“If we do those things, it’s hard to beat us,” Wiley said.
