Here are 5 key questions based off of the matchup:
How far can Edmond North’s dynamic guard depth carry them?
When looking at the Huskies roster you will see a steady rotation of quality guards who can pass, dribble, and shoot.
That may not sound impressive but most teams dont have 5 guards who can lead their team in scoring on any given night. Dalante Shannon is the standout for Edmond North as he can get wherever he wants on the floor.
The beautiful thing is that the Huskies allow Shannon to showcase his quality decision-making skills which only help his teammates.
Landry Harris and Josh Price bring spacing and surprising good slashing to their offense. Both can shoot from deep with confidence however if you have a bad closeout they both can blow right past you.
If there was a 6th man award in high school, Harris would be a contender this year. He came in the game off the bench and immediately made an impact. Knocking down shots while also showing his ability to finish around the rim. He had a nice reverse layup in traffic which gave the Huskies some momentum.
Joell Wilson opened the game versus Mustang with a three which set the tone for the evening. He continued to knock down timely shots the rest of the game.
It was impressive to see such good guard play coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see how far this group can take the Huskies in 2020.
Is Jacobe Johnson as good as advertised for Mustang?
There are occasions when you are made aware of a sensational talent coming into high school who can have an impact right away.
The Mustang student section had the “He’s a Freshmen” chants ready to go as they knew how good Johnson was. He made it very clear to me today that he is better than I had heard and his skill level was impressive.
WIth Ethan Scott being held in check for most of the game, As few Freshmen do, Johnson knew he had to step up and create offense for Mustang.
He was getting to the rim with ease and powering through more mature defenders. He also hit the last two threes for Mustang to make it a one point game.
Will Ethan Scott be able to put up the scoring numbers at Mustang like he did last year?
Scott didnt have a great day offensively however the credit goes to Edmond North staying disciplined to the scouting report. Scott is a lights out shooter who can put up 30 or 40 points in a heartbeat.
Which you could tell the Huskies respected and made sure not to give Scott any air space to get a shot off from deep.
They switched most of his off ball screens and made sure he didn’t get anything off of baseline out of bounds plays.
It was a great defensive performance from Edmond North however I doubt Scott is held in check for much longer.
What is Abraham Aghasedo’s ceiling?
The Edmond North big man played really well in the painted area Tuesday night. He was a dominant force on the glass and he showed that he has solid touch around the basket.
At 6’6, Aghasedo has a frame of a defensive end and it showed against Mustang.
The Broncos had no answer for the Edmond Santa Fe transfer which is why he lived at the free throw line all night.
It will be interesting to see how the Huskies use him going forward. On a team with a possible D1 prospect and a plethora of talented guards, it can be tough to remember to feed the big fella on the block.
Aghasedo can be a bit stiff at times with his moves however with time it looks like he will get more fluid with his offensive moves. In the post you need a go-to move and he has it with his right hand baby hook.
Keep an eye on Aghasedo’s development throughout the season as it will be a key factor in how far the Huskies go.
Is Dalante Shannon one of the best playmakers in the state?
Just to clarify, it was known going into tonight’s matchup with Mustang that Shannon is an outstanding player overall and he deserves all of the preseason accolades he has received.
However, what I didn’t know going in was that Shannon can be a true point guard as easily as he can slash and get baskets from the wing.
During AAU, Shannon mainly occupied on the perimeter as a scorer first which is what his role required of him.
Walking out of their win versus Mustang, Shannon made it very clear that he can set up his teammates as well as anyone in the state.
There were numerous occasions where he would get a ball screen, get down hill, and then fire off a picture perfect pass to create a shot for his teammate.
There was one play where he received a double ball screen at the top of the key going to the right with two shooters in the corners.
Shannon came off the screen and in Lebron-type fashion he zipped the ball across to the opposite wing where Josh Price was open and hit the jumper. Not many “scorers” are able to make that pass at the high school level.
Tonight showed me that Shannon has another tool in his bag that I wasn’t quite aware of. Walking in it was clear he could slash and get to the rim while also having a nice jumper from the perimeter.
As the clock hit 0:00 in the fourth, it was even more clear that Shannon is a top tier playmaker who is going to be setting up his teammates with beautiful passes all season long.
