But a recent 31-point performance against Torrey Pines might change that.
Sanchez showed the ability to score at every level, and against perhaps one of the best individual defenders in So-Cal in Chris Howell.
With his improved shooting from the perimeter on full display, Sanchez served notice that he will be a force in the San Diego Section this season.
Sanchez said he doesn’t worry about position. He is a basketball player, he said.
“I am a difference maker on both sides of the ball,” Sanchez said. “I can guard multiple positions and I can score from all three levels.”
When asked about the strength of his game, he highlighted his IQ, motor and footwork, handle and ability to shoot from deep.
He said he is working on his first step and explosiveness to complement those strengths.
After a strong spring and summer with Gamepoint Basketball, Sanchez said he is being recruited by Air Force, UC San Diego, Boston University, Dartmouth, Holy Cross and Pepperdine.
And he has lofty goals for both himself and his team.
“My team goal is to get both a CIF section and state title,” Sanchez said. “My personal goal is to be the best player in San Diego.”
