Five players from outside of California, two from Fresno and four more from Northern California were among by choices as the Top 25 players in the Sept. 21&2 camp that was held at Lynwood High.
*The non-Californians were 2023 post Osiris Grady (Las Vegas Silverado) and point guard Jordan Ross (Pleasant Grove in Utah); and 2022 posts Jaxon Kohler (Coronado in Henderson, NV) and Asa White (Garner, NC, Magnet); and, the guy who shared camp Most Outstanding Player honors with Kijani Wright of L.A. Windward, 6-7 Aidan Shaw (Blue Valley in Overland Park, KS).
*San Joaquin Memorial High provided the two Fresno Top 25 picks in 6-4 JoJo Hunter (Class of 2022) and 5-10 A.J. Johnson (2023).
*And, from northern portion of California, were point guard Jordan Pope (2022/Prolific Prep in Napa); wings Varick Lewis (2023/Elk Grove Monterey Trail) and Jaylen Thompson (2022/Alameda St. Joseph-Notre Dame); and the No. 1 freshman in Northern California, 6-8 Jalen Lewis (PICTURED/Oakland Bishop O’Dowd).
Shaw may have put himself squarely in the conversation as a Top 25 player – or better – in the national Class of 2022 with his performance at both ends of the floor.
Kohler, who attended Wasatch Academy in Utah as a freshman, once more demonstrated low-post footwork that would make a lot of NBA players jealous. And Ross is about as slick as they come at the position in this class.
Grady has a chance to evolve into a “stretch 4” as his jump shot continues to evolve and White was a forceful rebounder and shot blocker.
Hunter is among the most multi-faceted players in the California sophomore class and is an especially good passer and defender.
The slick Johnson is one of a bunch of terrific point-guard prospects in the California Class of 2023.
Pope was one of the best passers in the camp while Varick Lewis and Thompson were “slashers” who also hit a number of jump shots apiece.
And Jalen Lewis is the latest in a group of exceptional “big” prospects Lou Richie has coached at one of the west’s best programs.
