“I started playing when I was 3 at the Y but didn’t start playing seriously until about 9 years old.” says Whitney. Brandon would eventually go onto play for the CAVS, a youth AAU program, who he credits with the biggest part of his development. Brandon adds “they taught me the fundamentals, how to play in a system, and emphasized a lot on defense. I was constantly pushed hard and I think that made me a better basketball player and person.” After averaging just 1.8 PPG his freshman year, Whitney stormed out the gates to average 13.2 PPG his sophomore year, then to 16.9 PPG his junior year. We can expect more than just a numbers improvement for Whitney during his senior year. “I am looking to improve my leadership role this high school season. I need to become even more vocal and lead by example.”
As evident with his numbers, Whitney is a prolific scorer. He has an innate ability to create for himself and to get to the rim. In addition to slashing, Brandon plays through contact and draws a ton of fouls. As seen in his 26 point outing against Chaminade, Whitney achieved that total on 10 field goals and going 6 of 6 from the line, after getting to the line 11 times against Foothills Christian the night before. “I bring defense, scoring, and the ability to create for others to a team.” adds Whitney.

After a huge junior campaign and a scorching summer, Whitney announced his commitment to the University of Montana. “The coaching staff is full of great people and the culture of the program is one I want to be part of. I feel like they have everything I need to improve as a basketball player and a person there. Also, seeing the support of the community was pretty cool.” Having familiar faces from SoCal definitely assisted in his decision. “I knew Kyle Owens and Eddy Egun before my visit” adds Brandon. “I chose Montana because they started building a relationship with me early and showed they believed in me.” Additionally, “My goals after college are to go as far as basketball will take me and then work in the Sports Business field.”
With the college decision made, the Granada Hills product is looking forward to his senior campaign. “My goal this high school season is to improve, compete, and take my team as far as possible in the playoffs.” says Whitney. With fall league upon us and the regular season just a little over a month away, the journey for Brandon Whitney continues.
