Here were the sophomore standouts from the Top-20 game:
Sadraque Nganga SF 6’9 Hillcrest Prep (pictured)
-One of the rare top-20 players in the country from his class and he fulfilled the hype easily on Sunday. He moves like a true wing and handles the ball like a guard. He plays like a point forward type and can hit 3’s from deep. He rebounds well in his area and can take it coast to coast and flush it down way above the rim. He has some post moves but is mostly trying to face-up.
Patrick Chew SF 6’3 Brophy Prep
-The son of a college coach has a lot to like. He has a strong frame/build and loves getting downhill and scoring through contact. He is a very good passer and a physical defender. He also can make 3’s with deep range. He has a big motor and was arguably the best defender at the camp.
Bear Cherry PF 6’8 St. Mary’s
-A big wide body prospect is a load to deal with in the post. He is the younger brother ASU forward Taeshon Cherry. He has huge hands and big feet. He is skilled in the post and can face up to the 3pt line. His strength is obvious and works patiently in the post to go to work. He will need to lean out and continue to develop but has nice upside.
Damarion Pouncil C/PF 6’6 South Mountain
-A long and lean true athlete. He scores everything inside the paint as his range is limited. He can take one long stride and dunk the ball easily. He blocks everything near him and gobbles up every rebound. He moves really well from end to end and if he can improve his offensive game, watch out.
Michael Dienes F 6’6 Rancho Solano Prep
-A long skilled shooter. May stretch out a little more and become a true face-up 4-man. Reminds me a little of former Brophy Prep forward Jaxson Baker (Central Arkansas). He can put on some weight and improve his handle moving forward but has one of the better strokes for all the forwards in the class.
Kyle Waters SF 6’2 Red Mountain
-A fluid forward who can do many things well. He can shoot it from the perimeter plus handles the ball like a guard and take it all the way to the cup. He has a good frame and is fearless in the paint. He can make plays for others and plays the passing lanes well.
Tanti Felli PF 6’4 Pheonix Country Day
-A long forward who has nice upside. Looks like he will grow significantly more and made many plays during the day. He is good around the hoop and made one perimeter jumper showing his potential and is a solid athlete. Good rebounder in area and should make some noise for the Eagles sooner rather than later.
Anthony Jaramillo PG 5’9 Mountain Pointe
-Smart PG who can shoot it from the perimeter and is very competitive. He has a quick first step to turn the corner on his defender and get to the rim and lay it in. He has quick feet to defend other guards and is very competitive.
Marcus Coleman SG 5’11 Pueblo
-Strong downhill guard has a great body and he is tough as nails. He almost seeks the contact and bounces off of them to score it in the paint. He can improve his perimeter shooting but his aggressive play will get him many easy points inside and on the FT line.
Note:
Guards Orlando Gonzales (St. Mary’s) and DeOtis Nunn Jr (South Mountain) and Micah Pierce (Desert Vista) all played well once again. (EXPO 250 event)
