There is no arguing that many high school athletes put their heart and soul into their sport. Michigan high school basketball is filled with players that deserve to celebrate the work that they put in. This being Labor Day, we will look at 6 hard working players.
Maliq Carr (2020, 6’6″, SF, Oak Park)
Carr is a high level prospect in both football and basketball. It’s hard to imagine how difficult that is and how much work it takes. Carr is strong, tough, and almost unstoppable on a 1 dribble take to the bucket from the free throw line.
Carlos ‘Scooby’ Johnson (2020, 6’7″, SF, Benton Harbor)
Scooby Johnson had a college ready body and game…..as a freshman. Now a junior, he’s even stronger and more skilled. Johnson has a versatile game and is a double-double machine.
Pierre Brooks Jr. (2021, G/F, Detroit Frederick Douglass)
Brooks quietly goes about his business being one of the best in the state regardless of class. His compusure and understanding of the game can’t be natural…..he’s had to study the game and refine his skills relentlessly.
Julian Lewis (2021, 6’5″, SG, Ann Arbor Huron)
Please watch Lewis play basketball. He’s absolutely tireless. Lewis plays both ends of the floor ferociously. He’s one of the top perimeter defenders in the state and a superb rebounding guard.
Emoni Bates (2022, 6’8″, G/F, Ypsilanti Lincoln)
Being the best in the country doesn’t come easy. Obviously, he’s as naturally gifted as can be. But Bates simply grinds in order to get the most out of his abilities. Last Friday, while most students were enjoying high school football, Bates was drilling 70 three pointers in a row.
Ty Rodgers (2022, 6’6″, SF, Grand Blanc)
Rodgers is the kind of young man that every coach wants. He blazes his own path and puts in the work necessary to make it successfull. Rodgers is skilled with the ball and a great finisher.
