The Michigan class of 2021 had some players that really stood out at all levels during the spring and summer. Here is our class of 2021 Grassroots Player of the Year and Honorable Mentions:
Player Of The Year
Pierre Brooks Jr. (6’6″, G/F, Detroit Frederick Douglass, The Family)
Brooks Jr. was his typical self this grassroots season. He’s a versatile and high IQ player with a natural feel for the game. Brooks Jr. was a threat to score from anywhere on the floor for The Family. An example of his dominance came at the U.S. Open Championship, where he led his team to a title with a 40 point game in a double OT win. Brooks Jr.’s grassroots season has led to multiple high major Division 1 offers from the likes of Illinois, Iowa, Kanas State, Missouri, and Xavier.
Honorable Mentions
Jaden Akins (6’5″, G/F, Farmington, The Family)
Akins displayed a quick first step and was fast with the dribble, exploding to the rim. He gained multiple Division 1 offers from schools like Duquesne, Michigan State, and Missouri.
Kobe Bufkin (6’4″ CG, Grand Rapids Christian, UTS Elite/The Family)
Bufkin put his name on the map nationally and is now established as a top 70 prospect in the country. If not for a July injury, he’d be right up there with Brooks Jr.
Tyson Edmondson (CG, Ann Arbor Huron, Michigan Warriors)
Edmondson is improving quickly. This summer he was smooth, athletic, and contributed on both ends.
Ty Fortney (6’8″, PF, Taylor Trillium, Downriver Badboyz)
Fortney’s grassroots season put him squarely in the top 10 prospects in Michigan’s class of 2021. He’s a nasty finisher and excellent in transition.
Linden Holder (6’0″, PG, De La Salle, Michigan Goonies)
Holder will be one of the biggest risers in the rankings. He established himself as a leader that can score, dish, and defend.
Julian Lewis (6’6″, CG, Ann Arbor Huron, REACH)
Lewis continues to rise as a prospect and became a Division 1 target. He’s a defensive stopper and excellent rebounder from the perimeter.
Blake Lund (6’0″, CG, Linden, Oakland Elite)
Keep doubting Lund, because he’ll keep performing. The young man is a flat out winner that can stroke the ball from deep.
Trip Riemersma (6’4, SG, Zeeland East, GR Storm)
I’ve been all over this young man for about a year, and he’s going to make me look very smart. Riemersma has the size, shooting stroke, and athleticism of a big time college player.
Julian Roper (6’4″, SG, OLSM, Indy Heat)
Roper continues to impress. He’s smooth, athletic, and has a sweet stroke. He’s recently received offers from Illinois, Northwestern, and Ohio State.
Bryan Tyler (G, Belleville, Michigan HOYAS)
Tyler turned heads on the Prep Hoops Circuit and made scouts and college coaches add his name to their list. He’s got a nice hesitation dribble and is strong in transition.
Omar Ziegler (6’5″, SG, Detroit King, Michigan Playmakers)
Ziegler flies around the basketball court. This grassroots season, he proved to be an unselfish playmaker that had the look of a Division 1 player.
