Even though fall league is slowly approaching and the regular season is months away, it is never too soon to pick up the ball and look at a way too early season preview. Here are some high school seniors who will look to play bigger roles next season and be an integral part of their school’s success.
Paris Dawson, 2020 – Corona Centennial
With the exodus and departures of Jaylen Clark to Etiwanda, Dennis Cash to Trinity Prep, and the rumored transfer of DJ Davis, there will be a lot of holes to fill. Luckily, the Huskies of Corona Centennial will be able to rely upon senior guard Paris Dawson to patch the holes and carry the load for them in the 2019-2020 season. Dawson takes pride in his hustle and makes a name for himself as a defender. He has excellent lateral movement and does an amazing job of staying in front of his defender. His tenacious on ball defense separates himself from the rest of the prospects in high school basketball. On offense he has good midrange jumper and an innate slashing ability to get himself to the rim. On a loaded team, Dawson was still able to average 12.4 PPG last season and will be looking to improve upon that clip. The Huskies success will be dependent on Paris Dawson’s leadership and all around play.
Keith Dinwiddie, 2020 – Fairfax High School
With the transfer of Dior Johnson, and the rumored incoming transfers of 2 superstars, Keith will still be looked upon for his leadership as a senior. The 2020 combo guard is building off of a huge summer in which he was selected as a Pangos All American and also participated in invitation only NCAA Camps. Dinwiddie is a sharpshooter who will be depended on to stretch the floor to open up slashing lanes for his incoming teammates. He can shoot off the dribble and also run off of curls to get his shot. Look for the rising senior to take on a bigger role as a leader, as Fairfax High School embarks on its way to another City Section Championship.
Matt Lee, 2020 – Village Christian
One player who will have his name moving up the rankings will be Matt Lee. The 2020 combo guard from Village Christian has been on a tear this summer with breakout showings at Pangos Sweet 16, Cream of the Crop, Bigfoot Hoops Las Vegas Live events. Lee put up 12.6 PPG last year at Village Christian but has put up over 18 PPG at all 3 tournaments his AAU ARC team has played in during the summer. Lee has a deceptive handle and good footwork which allows him to create space off the dribble. He also shows the skills to be a knockdown 3 pt shooter, and can also catch and shoot from midrange. When not scoring, Lee also does a good job of looking for his teammates.
Jahvy Medearis, 2020 – Warren High
Previously undervalued and utilized at his previous stops, it looks like Medearis has finally found the right system and coach who can properly harness his basketball skills. After a successful junior campaign at Warren, the scoring guard will is looking to have a breakout year as a senior. Warren High School will be handing the reigns to Medearis as they will look upon him to shoulder the scoring load and also create for his teammates. When he is hot, Medearis can score fast and quickly in bunches. Jahvy properly utilizes triple threat moves to create spacing and combines it with his smooth ball handling which allows him to shoot off the dribble. He possesses one of the quickest hesitation moves which he utilizes both to get to the rim or to free himself up for a jumper. Look for Medearis’ name to be among the top scorers in CIF-SS this next season.
Austin Cook, 2020 – Damien HS
Building off of a stellar 2019 season for the Spartans will be Austin Cook. Never questioned as a shooter, Cook keeps defenders honest with his scorching 3pt stroke. Austin is the son of Life Pacific Coach Tim Cook who has instilled great values and fundamentals in the younger Cook as he shows high basketball IQ on the floor. The senior is also a team player as he shows an ability to get his teammates involved, and will also rebound and box out for the ball. Cook put up 15 PPG, 7 RPG, and 4.5 APG last season and will look to be even better. Look for the Damien Spartans to make a deep run in the CIF-SS playoffs.
Davian Brown, 2020 – Pasadena High School
Following in the steps of older brother and Cal State Northridge guard Darius Brown II, the younger Brown brother will be looking to lead the Pasadena Bulldogs during his senior season. Davian scores in an abundant of ways; he has a consistent 3 point jumper, can pull up consistently from midrange, and also utilizes a floater when getting into the lane. Brown also has crafty and creative handles which allow him to get by his man. The eldest Brown bloomed during his senior year averaging 15 and 11 a game and we can expect the younger Brown to explode during his senior campaign as well.
