Continue ReadingIrvine, California is the destination of dozens of competitive programs throughout the west coast and The Truth EYBL and Orange County group is one of the headlining programs. On day two I had the opportunity to catch The Truth 15u Orange County squad and they are littered with young talent to be aware of moving forward.
The first player that stood out was 2023 small forward Donald Jones. At 6’6, Donald has great length and appears to still be growing. He can take his man off the bounce and make plays going to the basket. He definitely looks the part, despite not having played a single high school game yet. He mentioned that he also played on the EYBL 15u team for the Truth this summer. 2022 6’4 small forward Wesley Mwaniki also impressed today. He has a lot of potential and showed a willingness to play with some physicality in the paint. Although naturally gifted athletically, he will have to continue to work on his all around skill set and develop into a complete player. 2023 6’7 PF Thomas Brascia displayed toughness and a nose for the ball, even diving on the floor to go get it. He is still growing into his body, but he showed some skill finishing around the paint. Last, but not least, one of the best young prospects coming up in California is 2024 6’3 G Jayden Harper (feature image). Yes, you read that ’24 correctly. Jayden is playing up two grades for the Truth and although he showed his youth at times, he has a chance to be special as he grows and gets stronger. He has solid ball skills at 6’3 and a smoothness about his game on the offensive end. Jayden also got lots of deflections on defense with his wingspan. He looks like he has a chance to grow to 6’7 or taller, as he hasn’t even started 8th grade yet and he is not physically developed. He is a couple years away from likely being actively recruited, but college coaches will know about Jayden Harper sooner rather than later.
The team had some other good 2022’s and 2023’s, but I was only able to track down some of the players for the correct names and classes, as they were not listed correctly in the media packet. This team is very young, with multiple guys playing up, but they have legitimate prospects on their roster nonetheless.
