Continue ReadingOriginally, Alex Huibregtse was planning to play his final AAU season with Phenom University’s NY2LA team. Since Phenom’s birth last year, the program has quickly become of the most respected and feared programs on the AAU Circuit. But, there is no doubt who the more formidable Phenom team is. With Jalen Johnson, Jamari Sibley, and Patrick Baldwin Jr. all suiting up for Phenom’s EYBL team, the NY2LA squad has served as Robin to the 17U EYBL Batman squad; a superhero team in its own right, but always right behind the main event. After Playing a couple of tournaments with Phenom U NY2LA, it became clear that Huibregtse was capable of jumping up a level. Since getting pulled up, Huibregtse has provided his new squad with some great play. Scoring 8.2 points per game, expect the guard to be a key player as Phenom U chases their first Peach Jam title in July.
Prep Hoops Wisconsin caught up with the junior guard to talk about recruiting, Grafton, Phenom University, and more.
During his junior season at Grafton, Huibregtse proved to be one of the best scorers in Wisconsin. The sure-shooting guard scored 20 or more points in a single game on 13 different occasions, with a season-high of 33 points. “As a team, we didn’t do as well as I thought we should’ve, but we made some big improvements from my sophomore year which was good. As for me personally, I thought I had a pretty good season, but I am definitely not satisfied and I am working on all areas I need to improve on to help my team win more games next year,” said Huibregtse.
During his final year of high school, Huibregtse said, “For my senior year I really want to change the culture and perception of Grafton basketball. I want to create a winning tradition and set the tone for the future of the program.” In the 2019-20 season, Grafton will return their top three leading scorers from last year. With Huibregtse leading the charge, Grafton has a chance to turn some heads next year.
While he is sure to boost his stock during his final year at Grafton, Huibregtse’s main focus right now is improving his game. “Right now I’m focusing on improving my finishing and my consistency on defense.” He also said that he thinks his strengths are “knocking down shots, playing hard and defending.”
Due to his great play in his young career, the guard has received interest from some notable D1 and D2 schools. Huibregtse says that UW- Milwaukee, Air Force, Michigan Tech, Winona State, and Minnesota Duluth are the programs that have been showing the most interest. Playing on a bigger stage for Phenom U will introduce the sharpshooter to more top tier schools.
After finishing a very strong junior season, Alex Huibregtse will look to maximize the minimal amount of high school basketball that he has left. A multitude of colleges will be following him as his AAU season comes to a close and his senior season tips off. It is only a matter of time before he starts to reel in some offers.
