Adidas DC Superlatives
WASHINGTON, DC — Prep Hoops was in the gym all weekend at Adidas DC and now its time to take a look back at what we learned. Below is a rundown of the local superlative winners from the tournament.
BEST SHOOTER | MILTON MATTHEWS | DC THUNDER/ROCK CREEK ’20
This comes as no surprise, but Milton Matthews was the best shooter we saw in DC this weekend. The southpaw sharpshooter has unlimited range and a super quick release.
BEST POINT GUARD | ELIJAH HAWKINS | NEW WORLD/DEMATHA ’21
Elijah Hawkins is really growing into a solid point guard. It remains to be seen how this will translate into his next high school season, but Hawkins looks ready for the challenge as summer league looms.
BEST COMPETITOR | SAVEON JACKSON | NEW WORLD/KIPP ’21
Saveon Jackson is a high level competitor who can really defend. Jackson is a relentless paint getter who proved that he can consistently finish in traffic or through contact.
BEST RIM PROTECTOR | JAMEL MELVIN | DC THUNDER/POTOMAC SCHOOL ’20
More often than not, Jamel Melvin blocked the shots that he was in position to challenge. He has incredible timing which in conjunction with his length make him an adept rim protector.
BEST STOCK RISER | JAMAL BARNES | DC THUNDER/SSSAS ’20
Jamal Barnes certainly helped himself with a strong all-around showing this weekend. He continues to make shots at a high level while mixing it up off the bounce. Barnes has been a reliable defender and a vocal presence on the court as well.
BEST UNDERCLASSMEN | FAVOUR AIRE | NEW WORLD/MCNAMARA ’22
Favour Aire is certainly in the discussion for top rim protector, but at this point he is certainly the top 2022 prospect we saw this weekend. Tyrell Ward should be mentioned in this conversation, but he is more potential than production at this point.
BEST POST SCORER | DOWAR JIOKLOW | NEW WORLD/FLINT HILL ’20
Dowar Jioklow is a technician in the low and high post. The skilled lefty has great footwork and touch which along with his length make him a difficult matchup.
BEST FEEL | TYLER BRELSFORD | NEW WORLD/MSJ ’20
One thing that stands out about Tyler Brelsford is his efficiency with the ball. He clearly tries to make the most of each possession which is an admirable trait for a lead guard.
