PrepHoops 6A Player of the Year – Aaron Deloney (2019 Grant HS)
We’ll cut right to the chase – the PrepHoops Oregon 6A Player of the Year is Aaron Deloney. The quick 6-foot point guard may not have won back-to-back state titles, but the senior definitely did what it took to give Grant a legitimate chance. Deloney wrapped up a brilliant high school career and as he now sets his sights on college hoops, he can look back on this past year specifically with a lot of pride.
“Looking back it was a fun one,” Deloney said. “We definitely wanted to be on the other side (of the state tournament bracket) but things didn’t go our way. But all season long we fought hard in practice and we got along. It’s a good group of guys and I’m glad I got to finish the way that I did with them.”
Despite losing to Jefferson in their first game at state, Grant recovered to capture the fourth place trophy. It was a fitting end individually for Deloney who was stellar all season long. On the year he finished the year ranked second in the state in scoring (26.0 ppg) and also ranked among the state leaders in assists (5.7 apg) and three-point field goals made per game (2.6). He completed high school with 1,878 career points and his 182 points in the OSAA State tournament ranks fourth all-time.
“I felt like I finished out really good,” Deloney said. “Individually I set a couple of records at the Les Schwab, points at our school, and it was really good. My teammates helped me get those and I appreciate them a lot for it.”
Deloney will get a chance to play one more time as a high school senior this weekend at the Northwest Shootout, where he will be a part of the Oregon team hoping to pull an upset over a talent-laden team from Washington. From there, it will be getting ready for his college career at Vermont, for which he’s already putting in the work for that level.
“I want to get stronger, shoot the ball more efficiently, and continue to get my teammates involved,” Deloney said.
Deloney currently ranks as the #2 player in the PrepHoops Oregon class of 2019 rankings.
