There were a couple of Arizona teams that entered the tournament but the talk of the tournament was by far Powerhouse Hoops. They absolutely dominated in 17U and 16U. Here are some key player takeaways from the weekend.
PHH 17U
Evan Nelson – Team MVP
Evan Nelson showed that he belongs with the top guards in the nation. He played at an elite level and did everything except run the concession stand this weekend. He attacked the basket well, shot from deep, made some plays for his teammates, got on the boards, and locked up on defense. Nelson gives you a little bit of everything and should be on every D1 coach’s radar.
Trent Brown – Best Playmaker
Trent Brown might have had one turnover the entire weekend, maybe! He took such good care of the ball and made the right plays. He’s always hitting the open man and has exceptional court vision. Trent Brown is also automatic from deep!
Alem Huseinovic – Best Shooting Performance
If we’re talking about shooting, we have to talk about this guy. He pulled up early and often. Huseinovic could not miss a jump shot! He even won player of the day for day 1 when he dropped 18 points while only missing 1 shot.
Logan Phillips – High Potential Prospect
Logan Phillips is by far the most underrated player on this team. I don’t believe he has any D1 offers but he will have them very soon! If you’re a college coach, get in early on this guy, he has a chance to be very special. Phillips is super long and athletic while also being very skilled. He did a bit of everything from hitting 3’s to rebounding to highlight dunks. Logan Phillips can flat out hoop.
PHH 16 UAA
DaRon Holmes – Team MVP
DaRon Holmes is the most highly recruited player on this squad and maybe for the whole tournament and it showed. Nobody could stop him from scoring or get him off the boards. Holmes is also an elite shot blocker and even defended guards on the perimeter very well! Holmes is currently ranked in the Top 40 for 2021 but should make the jump to Top 25 very soon.
Justice Jackson – Best Playmaker
Jackson was dishing out assists all weekend long. He is great at pushing the pace and collapsing the defense for open kick outs. He has tremendous court vision and the passing ability to get it there. Jackson and Holmes were a nightmare in transition.
Brett Hardt Jr. – Best Shooting Performance
Brett Hardt Jr. was by far the best shooter of the team and maybe the whole tournament. He picks his spots very well and knows how to get open. PHH 16 UAA ran him off of a lot of screens that resulted in a Hardt bomb from deep. Against The Truth EYBL, Hardt showed up big time, knocking down 4 3’s.
JT Elder – High Potential Prospect
JT Elder has flashes of greatness this weekend. There were moments in the game where he looked like one of the most elite players in the country. He has such a great ability to get to the rim and has a number of moves to finish. He also shot the 3 ball well, knocking down 3 of them down against Coastal Elite. JT Elder has a chance to be one of the top kids in the nation.
