In the semifinals, Iron Mountain repped the UP and upended DEPSA in a physical matchup. Pewamo-Westphalia overcame the 3 point theatrics of Erie-Mason’s Joey Liedel to earn a trip to the title game.
The championship game featured 2 controversial whistles. But lets not forget, the game was highlighted by an incredible performance and a championship effort from both teams. Pewamo-Westphalia came away with a state championship by a score of 53-52.
MVP
Do to the controversy surrounding the game, I’ve decided to name Co-MVP’s. We should really celebrate the performance of both of these young men.
Andre Smith (2019, C, Pewamo-Westphalia)
Smith was was an emotional and statistical leader for Pewamo-Westphalia. The big man had 14 points in the semifinals. He had a team high 21points in the championship game. Smith consistently showed the ability to step out behind the arc and hit the 3. He had 5 three pointers in the title game. Smith was also a physical prescense in the paint.
Foster Wonders (2021, G, Iron Mountain)
Wonders made a statement in the Final 4. He showed the state exactly why he’s considered a top talent on a national scale in the class of 2021. Wonders went off for 28 points in a semifinal win over DEPSA. He followed that with a 20 point performance in the title game. Wonders quite simply had an MVP performance in the final 2 games.
Honorable Mention
Aaron Bearss (2020, F, Pewamo-Westphalia)
Bearss put his name on the map last weekend. He led his team in scoring with 16 points against Erie-Mason. Bearss had a critical 15 points in the championship game. His high level of play was key for Pewamo-Westphalia.
Marcus Johnson (2020, G, Iron Mountain)
Johnson was magnificent throughout the playoffs. He had 23 points against DEPSA and 17 points in the title game against Pewamo-Westphalia. Johnson proved that he’s a prospect to watch in the junior class.
