D1: There wasn’t an overwhelming bandwagon trailing Brookfield Central, who began the postseason as a two-seed and made the jump to the top-seed before state. But Cole Nau’s performance drew a crowd, as he scored 21 points, dished out six assists, and grabbed eight boards en route to a win over Neenah (in round one). Not to mention, his defensive efforts caused Neenah to shoot 17-51 from the field.
Honorable Mentions: David Joplin (Brookfield Central), Delaware Hale (Sun Prairie), Glenn Martin (West Allis Central)
D2: Nicolet’s Jalen Johnson drew his toughest test at the high school level in Milwaukee Washington. And prior to that game, there was a lot of talk about the talent gushing from the Washington roster, and that it may be too much for Johnson and Co. to handle. Yet, in the midst of the chatter, Johnson didn’t flinch. Johnson scored 37 points, showed the point guard side of his game through his passing, and caught an alley-oop dunk over five-star forward, Michael Foster. All of which came after Johnson engineered a double-double in the game before.
Honorable Mentions: Johnny Davis (La Crosse Central), Kobe Johnson (Nicolet), Jamari Sibley (Nicolet),
D3: Martin Luther’s Trequan Carrington exploded for 41 points en route to a 96-61 sidestep of Northwestern. The game quickly turned into a track meet for Carrington, who forced a fast break on what seemed like every possession of that first half. Not only did that earn him MVP, but it forced Waupun to put more focus on him defensively in the title game, freeing up his teammate Ace Evans for a solid performance.
Honorable Mentions: Marcus Domask (Waupun), Ace Evans (Martin Luther)
D4: Logan Mulhern played just one game, as Osseo-Fairchild lost to Lourdes Academy in their first state matchup. But, Mulhern exploited the Lourdes lack of height, scoring 33 points, grabbing 20 rebounds, and tallying 6 assists. That stat line trumped any performance in D4, and maybe the entire tournament.
Honorable Mentions: Jaden Kreklow (New Glarus), Henry Noone (Lourdes Academy)
D5: Jacob Ognacevic racked up 35 points and 19 rebounds in the state championship game versus Columbus Catholic. He’s been called second-coming of Sam Dekker for his height and scoring prowess, and his performance in state gave him a brightly lit, neon welcome sign for recruiters looking to nab an underrated player.
Honorable Mentions: Grant Manke (Bangor)
