When James Alexandre, Julian Cockrell, Drew Brunson, Keylan and Kalib Boone take the floor on Thursday afternoon they will have an opportunity to win their 100th varsity high school game. Over the last four years, this group of Memorial seniors is 99-12 with two state championships under their belts. The pursuit of their third state championship begins with a first-round matchup against Lawton MacArthur. Head Coach Bobby Allison knows this is a special group with all of the accomplishments they have had over the last four years.
“It has been an incredible four years,” said Coach Allison. It is a special time at Memorial. We have beaten a lot of really talented teams over the past four years.”
The senior class did not play a ton on varsity as freshmen but did suit up as Coach Allison saw something special in each of them. It all began with the five seniors in the 2019 Class watching their hopes of a state championship vanish before their eyes as Trey Hopkins sunk a buzzer beater to lift Carl Albert to a state championship.
“They watched us as freshmen lose on a heartbreaking buzzer beater on the Mabee Center floor,” said Coach Allison. “They were all on varsity the next year as well. Kalib and Keylan were huge guys off the bench for the 2017 state championship and then all of them played integral parts of last years state championship.”
The talent of the Tulsa Memorial senior class is undeniably there led by the two future Oklahoma State Cowboys Keylan and Kalib Boone. In every special class, you have to have high caliber players. The Boones are just that for Tulsa Memorial and Coach Allison has really enjoyed coaching Kalib and Keylan over their high school career.
“They make great plays with one another,” said Coach Allison. “They communicate well on the court and also with their teammates. They are unselfish. For both of them to shoot 60% from the field they have great shot selection and players around them who help them get great shots. They value being apart of Tulsa Memorial. They were able to commit early to OSU but they are not ready to play college basketball yet. They along with the other seniors want to play three more games for Memorial and win three more games for Memorial. They continue to be great teammates and great student-athletes. Teachers and students at Tulsa Memorial love them.”
All five of the Chargers will have opportunities to get their college paid for through the game of basketball. Getting athletes to colleges is something Coach Allison and the staff at Tulsa Memorial pride themselves on. The five seniors want nothing more on Saturday than to holding their third straight Class 5A state championship. Standing in their way are seven other talented teams waiting for their opportunity to knock off the Chargers dynasty. Win, lose or draw the Tulsa Memorial 2019 Class has a lot to be proud of over the past four years. Tulsa Memorial will take the court at 2:00 pm looking to notch win number 100 for what will go down as one of the best basketball senior classes in Tulsa Memorial history.
