While many of their younger players had productive outings, senior guard Anthony Carpenter was the one who refused to let his team lose. Carpenter finished with a game-high 23 points to go with eight rebounds and five steals. We caught up with the 5-foot-11 guard to talk about a number of topics:
PH: Go ahead and assess the team’s performance for me after that big win.
AC: I felt like it was a great team performance. We had a great practice on Saturday and just wanted to come out and give it our all. We have five seniors and I wasn’t trying to leave without a championship. We executed our plays well and we did great in our press. St. Paul’s has a lot of great players, so we had to game plan against Ziggy [Reid] and wanted to get him out of the game. Ahmad [Harrison] did a very good job of doing that for us.
PH: What were some other things in the game plan that you felt like you guys performed?
AC: Coach put in a few new sets to prepare for their zone. We did a good job of executing two of them. Two of the new sets really helped us today. In their zone, they want you to get quick shots and shoot three’s, so we wanted to get the ball in the middle and use some high-low action to see if we could get some lay ups.
PH: Take a step back to October when you were coming to the gym for preseason workouts and whatnot. How has your game grown?
AC: I think I’ve become a way better leader. Early on I wasn’t talking as much, but as the season went along, I became a real senior and started encouraging everybody all the time and have the mindset of us needing to win this championship again. And we did it.
PH: You’re going out on a high note as a senior, but soon the focus will turn towards college. What do you need to improve on this spring and summer to prepare for the next level?
AC: I think I just need to keep improving on my defense and my vocal skills. My defense is there, but it can get better. I just need to continue being vocal and tightening up on my ball-handling and shooting and I think I’ll be a great college player.
PH: What schools are recruiting you?
AC: Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith, Bowie State, Delaware State, Hood and Albright.
PH: Do you have a timetable in terms of when you’ll make a decision?
AC: I’m gonna relax for a little bit and enjoy this and in about a month or so I think I’ll make a decision. I still have some workouts with some of those schools and I want to see how they go.
