After missing his first attempt, Anyanwu fought off several defenders to put in the game-winning putback with three seconds left, giving the Dons a 47-46 win in the title game at RIMAC on Friday night.
Anyanwu finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, none more important than the final rebound and two points to seal the victory.
Obinna Anyanwu is interviewed by reporters after hitting the game-winning basket in the CIF Division 1 championshipThe top-seeded Dons avenged an earlier season loss to the third-seeded Lancers, which shot under 30 percent from the field but still had a chance to win it after junior point guard Kimo Ferrari hit a deep three to put his team up 46-45.
Ferrari finished with a team-high 16 points, but shot just 5-16 from the field and committed five turnovers against two assists.
The Lancers stayed in the game by forcing Cathedral into turnovers and converting them into points on the other end. The Dons committed 17 turnovers as a team – seven by point guard Alex Wade – which allowed Parker to take an early lead.
But the Dons clawed back behind the scoring of sophomore wing Thomas Notarainni, who scored a game-high 18 and was the most efficient player on the floor, shooting 6-11 from the field. They cut the lead to two at the break, 26-24, in part following Kimo Ferrari picking up his third foul just before half.
Cathedral Catholic took the lead for the first time late in the third quarter, but Jacob Jovien’s putback gave Parker the 36-35 lead entering the fourth.
Parker retook control of the game in the fourth quarter, but lost their key rebounder and only interior presence when Matt Bender fouled out in the final minutes, with the Lancers up 43-40.
But Cathedral retook the lead by way of a 5-0 run by Alex Wade, who hit a three and a runner to set up the game’s final minute.
Both teams are idle until Tuesday, the start of the CIF Regional Playoffs.
