With players from all levels still unsigned in the 2019 class, college coaches from all divisions should be following up with PrepHoopsNC’s scouts Justin Byerly and Charles Clark to see where and what players would fit into their program.
In this first article we are heading to West Charlotte High School to get a look at point guard Cartier Jernigan. The athletic, scoring, versatile point guard is the rock of West Charlotte. Florida State signee Patrick Williams is the thoroughbred but Jernigan is the glue that holds the team together. He can guard multiple positions and is a strong ball handler. He is a strong on-ball defender and can really cause match-up problems with his ability to guard more than one position.
For the Lions, Jernigan is averaging 14.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 6.6 APG, and 2.9 SPG. Pretty good numbers in one of the state’s toughest conferences. The tough as nails point guard has offers from Hampton, Towson and Mercer at this point in his recruitment. USC-Upstate was in this week to see him play.
Back in September, Cartier expressed feelings about making a decision soon but has since cooled off and waiting to see what other programs may become interested. I would expect a decision to come in the coming months. He is a player that once the transfer market starts to grow will find a program that needs all that he can offer. A strong end of the season run for West Charlotte is key in how far his recruitment will ultimately end up taking him. He is a definite Division One level point guard and he comes from one of the basketball hotbeds in the state, Charlotte.
He spent this past summer playing in the Nike EYBL with Charlotte based Team United.
