Rock Creek 68, Latta 37
In what started off as a low-scoring affair ended up being a scoring circuit for the Class A fifth-ranked Rock Creek Mustangs. Led by senior guards Sammy Cahlil, Karson Dry, and Darian James and anchored by wings Aaron Taylor and Elijah Factor, the ‘Stangs capitalized on Latta blunders and dominated the fast-break game. James led all scorers with 15. Dry had 13 for the Mustangs. Latta was led in scoring by senior Hayden Hoppe with 9 points. Rock Creek will play Dale on Friday at 5:40 p.m.
Dale 71, Tishomingo 52
The 2A No. 1 Dale Pirates opened the NYC with a win over 3A Tishomingo. The Pirates came out of the gate with a 12-2 lead over the Indians, and only continued to bury their foes with off-the-dribble play and dominance in transition. Forcing turnovers was key for Dale in the win. The Pirates were led in scoring by Gabe Gouge. The Pirates will play Rock Creek on Friday at 5:40 p.m.
Atoka 60, Talihina 58
In the most entertaining contest to this point in the day, Senior guard Coby Grimsley led the Atoka Wampus Cats to a 60-58 win with a 27-points performance concluded by a game-winning put-back with less than five seconds in the fourth quarter. Talihina’s Kyler Baugh, Austin Fenton, Kobe Billy and Nick McLemore had 17, 16, 15, and 9 points, respectively.
Kingston 72, Silo 26
The first-ranked 3A Kingston Redskins made a splash in the first round of the NYC with a win over a year-in, year-out accomplished basketball program in 2A Silo. Brady Brister was the highest-scoring Redskin with 17 points, followed by Rylee Holmes with 12. Silo’s Dylan Turner led the Rebels with 14 points.
