The John Wall Holiday was a grand event this year, as usual. Held in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the historic Broughton High School Gymnasium, where the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich played his home basketball games.
This year’s event featured 16 teams, including 11 for North Carolina, with other teams from New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, California and New Jersey.
Some of the outstanding individual performances are documented below.
South Central High School, of Winterville, North Carolina reached Saturday’s championship game of the TJ Warren bracket with wins over Leesville Road High School and Athens Drive High School, before facing New Jersey powerhouse, the Ranney School in the bracket’s 7:00 finale.
The Falcons are led by 6-10 230, North Carolina commit, Day’ron Sharpe, who averaged 18 points and 17 rebounds in the event.
South Central’s guards contributed greatly as well.
Shykeim Phillips, a 6-2 175, senior point guard averaged 17 points per game and as usual he ran the point with precision.
Phillips scored 20 points, on 7-10 and 6-8 from the line, with six rebounds, three assists and two steals in his team’s opening win over Athens Drive, of Raleigh. He followed that with a 16 point outing, hitting 7-14 and 2-2 from the line, with four assists and three steals in the Falcon’s 68-45 win over Leesville Road. Shykeim scored 15 in South Central’s 63-58 loss to Ranney School.
Jahzeer Baker, 5-9 165, senior, who shares the point guard position with Shykeim Phillips, had two double figure outings. The lefty is slick with the ball and he is a lights out shooter.
West Charlotte High School, another traditional power team in North Carolina, finished third in the TJ Warren eight-team bracket. The Lions, were led, as usual, by their Florida State bound senior, Patrick Williams, a 6-8 230, forward, but Quinton Thomas and Cartier Jernigan make excellent contributions for the Lions.
Quinton Thomas, a 6-4 180, senior, small forward for West Charlotte, had his best game against the eventual champion, the Ranney School, which features All Americans, Brian Antione and Scottie Lewis. Thomas had 18 points and eight rebounds, five of the offensive variety and also three steals against the New Jersey powerhouse.
