The 6-0 combo guard has started his junior year at Rancho Christian with a flourish. He played well in a televised win over Chicago Simeon in the Hoop Hall West Classic, and followed it up with a stellar outing in a win over Mission Bay at the inaugural Beach Bash, punctuated by a two-handed tip jam.
Stephens guarded star Mission Bay guard Boogie Ellis for most of the night, forcing him into tough, contested shots.
Stephens, who played travel ball with Gamepoint, described himself as “a very athletic two-way guard who focuses mainly on defense and prefers to take on any team’s ‘best player.'”
“I am starting to add more offensive attributes to my game,” Stephens said.
The guard, who is known for his lightning quick first step, has improved significantly shooting the ball from the perimeter, consistently knocking down jump shots off the catch. Combined with his ability to finish through contact, it’s easy to see why Stephens has been such an important part of the Eagles rotation.
He said he has worked to improve other aspects of his game, including ball handling against pressure and decision making, both areas where he has shown steady growth.
While he has yet to obtain a scholarship offer, Stephens claims interest from Eastern Washington, Cal State Bakersfield, Denver and UCSD.
“Some of my goals this year are to be a great teammate, stay coachable and win a national championship at Rancho Christian,” Stephens said. “Some other personal goals I have are to pick up offers and get my name out to the world.”
