Cedar High School has a young man by the name of Zab Santana who is a freshman and stands at 6’3 and weighs in at 195 lbs. In high school he might be taking freshman courses but on the court Zab looks nothing like a freshman.
In his second high school game Zab and Cedar High School squared off against perennial power Corner Canyon. He had never experienced playing in a hostel environment. Cedar hung tough but lost a heart breaker as Hayden Welling tipped in a shot as time expired. Cedar has been without one of their best players Dallin Grant, so look for them to improve once he is healthy.
Zab has lofty hopes of one day being part of a state championship team. “We have a really good team and we have a pretty good chance of winning”. Currently Cedar is 1-5 and Zab is averaging 10 points per game. Zab knows that there is still a lot to learn but still, he remains optimistic.
Zab knows that he at times takes contested shots he should avoid but he credits his coaching staff for remaining positive and helping him develop that IQ. He is willing to do whatever he needs to do to help his team win.
As Zab adjust to the flow of a varsity game he could have an easier time of letting the game come to him. When we watched him play against Corner Canyon he did force the action at times trying to make things happen.
Zab values the opportunity he is getting to learn and grow on the court. ” It’s been really cool playing around good basketball players, it makes the game a lot easier.” Zab continually credits his teammates Treyton Tebbs and Tanner Eyre for any future success..
We asked Zab who his game resembles he mentioned that people say he plays like Ben Simmons. I jokingly said, “Oh no! He can’t make 3’s.” Zab said, “I know, I have spent hours in the gym working on my 3-point shot.” When a young player is asking for keys to the gym to work on his game this young good things are prone to happen.
We expect Zab Santana to be a name you here more often in Utah as he continues to develop and reach his potential. He definitely has the athleticism and work ethic. Look for Cedar to bounce back in the next few games.
Good luck to Zab and his Cedar High School basketball team.
