Recruiting Update: Micah Garrett (2020 West Linn HS/Nike Team Northwest 16U)
The summer ended on a high note for Micah Garrett. The bouncy 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard from West Linn was a part of a tournament title team in Las Vegas and he was able to showcase his game in front of college coaches. Garrett has since picked up his first Division I scholarship offer and has heard from others, including one in which he will be making an unofficial visit to in October.
In July, Garrett and his Nike Team Northwest 16U squad finished out the circuit by capturing the Platinum bracket title of the Las Vegas Last Call. “Toward the end I went through some injuries but the last part went really well,” Garrett said. “I felt that I showed some point guard skills. I can plan the one through the three and I got to show some point guard skills and really distribute the ball.”
You could say that college coaches paid close attention. A little after he was all done, Garrett got a call that really got his college recruitment going as he received his first Division I scholarship offer from Jackson State. “One day they called me around 7 pm and said that they’re offering me,” Garrett said. “I don’t know much about the school yet but they said they liked my play style and how hard I worked.”
Garrett is excited about the offer but has also been in close contact with another school that he’ll be visiting in a couple of months. “I’m taking an unofficial visit in October to Colorado State,” Garrett said. “I’ll be going there with my coach (Tyler Toney). They text me all the time and keep in touch with me every day.”
Garrett has appreciated the close contact and that’s a major selling point for the Rams at this time, but that’s not the only reason why he’s liking them right now. “I really like how organized they are,” Garrett said. “They gave me a full plan about how a visit goes, talking to the coach, meeting the team, going to a football game. We’ll see how it goes.”
Garrett is also hearing from Pepperdine and Portland State so he’s keeping all of his options open. In the meantime he’s simply getting ready for the start of school on Monday. “I’ve been working out and lifting weights, getting ready,” Garrett said. “It’s been going good.”
Garrett currently ranks as the #1 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020.
