Ugland’s Summer Stock Raisers: Class of 2019 (Part I)
The last three months of travel basketball were filled with tournaments, events and showcase camps for high school basketball prospects to showcase their skills in front of scouts, media and college coaches alike.
Here are five players in the class of 2019 who raised their recruiting stock over the summer:
Jakob Alamudun, Marina / Cali Rebels
The 6-foot-5 forward had his improved perimeter shooting and ball skills on display, leading Cali Rebels to a number of impressive wins over the summer. Alamudun’s performances in front of college coaches earned him his first two Division I offers from Army West Point and Lehigh. What separates the rising senior from others in his class is the amount of energy he brings to the floor and his rebounding ability for his size.
Jordan Brinson, Westchester / Team Why Not / Cali Stars
Brinson spent the spring and first part of the summer nursing an injury, but his explosion with Cali Stars in Las Vegas increased the interest from college coaches. The 6-foot-3 guard helped lead Cali Stars to the BigFoot Hoops championship, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. Brinson is a high level perimeter defender and a guy who can play either guard position due to his size and basketball IQ.
Westchester guard Jordan Brinson helped lead Cali Stars 17u to the BigFoot Hoops championship in Las Vegas, earning tournament MVP honors in the process.Boogie Ellis, Mission Bay / Oakland Soldiers
Ellis is an interesting case because he didn’t need to prove himself to most media members who follow Southern California hoops as he already had a big reputation. But Ellis’ performance with the Oakland Soldiers on the EYBL circuit boosted his stock on a national scale. The 6-foot-3 guard is one of the smoothest scorers in the country and makes a 30-point game look effortless. He’ll have his pick of the litter when it comes time for him to decide where he wants to go to college.
Jarred Hyder, Damien / Team Eleate
For some reason, Hyder remained under-the-radar throughout his junior season despite having a big season for Cajon in San Bernardino. The 6-foot-3 scoring guard proved his worth on the summer circuit with huge scoring efforts in front of college coaches packing the baseline. Hyder continued to improve when finishing through and around contact through June and July.
Christian James, St. John Bosco / West Coast Elite 17U Gray
Whichever college gets James is going to love the player he is. The 6-foot-3 guard continued to show his improvements as a jump shooter, playmaker and passer, not to mention he’s a 4.0-plus student. James will be the catalyst for a loaded St. John Bosco high school team, which should result in more collegiate interest.
