Prep Hoops Summer Challenge: Friday Standouts
In this article:
Jamil Jones, 6’2 G (Rockford 5-0 Jones 17u) — 2019
The Guilford rising senior was identified very early on as a top prospect in a game vs Wisconsin Triple Threat that was chock-full of them. He’s very springy and despite his slender frame, finished well at the rim with contact. Jones scored a game-high 22 points, including two clutch free-throws late in a win over the Wisconsin squad.
Samuel Hoiberg, 5’10 G (Breakaway Basketball 15U) — 2021
The son of former Iowa State Cyclones wing and current Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, Samuel came out against Iowa Dynasty 15U and set the tone by canning two 3s in the first couple minutes of the game. He’s a heady and skilled combo guard who showed a great understanding of the game. Hoiberg can break down his opponent off the dribble and make tough shots, that in addition to his outside prowess.
David Williams, 6’1 G (Rock 5-0 Jones 17U) — 2019
A versatile combo-guard is a guy who will burn you from beyond the arch or from dribble-drive. He canned four 3-balls and was getting to the rim often during a tough win over a talented Rockford 5-0 squad. The Harlem High rising senior was one of the more deft offensive players we’ve seen yet at the tourney.
Joey Goodman, 5’8 PG (Iowa Dynasty 16U) — 2020
An Iowa City West product, Goodman played the role of catalyst perfectly against DiverseCity during a pool play win. He was pushing the ball well and doing an excellent job at finding teammates. But he was scoring too, and led his squad with 14 points during an entertaining 57-52 win.
Johnny Joens, 6′ G (Iowa Dynasty 16U) — 2020
If the last name looks familiar, that’s probably because this Cedar Rapids Prairie guard is the younger cousin of former Xavier wing Jackson Joens. Johnny is smaller than his cousin, but definitely has the hoops gene. He’s a confident shooter who takes and makes tough shots from deep. His balance with the ball in is hands is fantastic and he can handle it too. He could be a breakout player for the Hawks this winter.
Maxwell Lampe, 6’6 PF (Iowa Dynasty 16U) — 2020
Another Cedar Rapids Prairie rising junior who was utterly impressive, Lambe is a guy that could do a lot of damage in the paint the next two years. He’s a big-bodied post with some soft touch and can step-out and can a 3-ball, although he is very selective about the shots he takes. His vision is a huge plus, Lampe likes to scan the defense and will fire a dime at a moments notice.
Gabriel Mason, 6’4 SG (DiversCity 16U) — 2020
Probably the most gifted natural shooter we saw yesterday, Mason is a tall and rangy shooting guard who’s always got an eye to the rim. He rained in a total of five 3-balls en route to 28 points during a narrow loss to Iowa Dynasty. The Metamora Township wing was adept off the ball, and was using his cuts well to score six buckets from inside the arch, too.
Kyler Filewich, 6’8 PF (Team Manitoba 17U) — 2019
One of the best true big-men we’ve seen this offseason, Filewich is strikingly big, 6’8 with a solid frame, and he doesn’t waste much time outside of the paint. For his size, he gets up quite well, and can throw down two-hand slams with ease. He’s got soft touch around the rim and runs the floor really well. What’s best though, were his clever dimes he was dropping all over the floor for his teammates. North Dakota has offered, others might soon be on board.
