CoBL Interstate Shootout: NJ 2028 standouts

City of Basketball Love hosted its annual fall Interstate Shootout last weekend, bringing in nearly 120 teams from five states to compete over a stacked two days of action in Philly. Keep reading for a look at several 2028's from the Garden State who impressed over the course of the weekend. Colonia got off to a slow start on Saturday morning with its star guard struggling to get going from the field, but Rodriguez put on a show in the ensuing game and a half to send the Patriots home with a 2-0 record. Known initially as a sharpshooter, Rodriguez eventually got going from the perimeter while showing off polished mechanics across different situations, deep range, and unwavering confidence. Where he impressed even more and showed the most growth was in his ability to initiate offense, bend defenses off the dribble, and finish explosively above the rim after turning the corner. Rodriguez will have a lot on his plate again this year and looks like he's already benefitted from the room he's had to stretch the limits of his game, blossoming into a pretty clearcut D1 recruit in the process. Making his competitive debut with his new Camden Catholic squad, Suarez understandably took a bit to get going but put together a strong second half against Radnor (PA) to show what the Irish could wind up looking like by the season and playoff time. The unquestioned focal point at Gloucester Tech (NJ), Suarez is adjusting to playing with an increased level of talent around him and showed the ability to condense his game within the team structure. He was effective spacing the floor as a shooter while showing mismatch scoring ability off the dribble, some passing feel in high-low actions, and consistent energy crashing the glass to create extra possessions. Coming off an injury that cost him the spring and summer, Suarez is still working back into peak game shape but is the type of natural talent in the frontcourt who scholarship-level coaches want to know about. CBA was one of a handful of North Jersey programs to make the trip down to Philly and played one of the games of the weekend in a nail-biting loss to Hill School (PA) on Saturday afternoon. Cooper impressed at the helm of the Colts' offense, putting on a clinic with his ability to pick the defense apart out of pick-and-roll action. The junior floor general routinely set up his bigs for easy looks at the rim while using his speed and tight handle to get to his spots off the bounce when he wanted. Cooper's size and slight frame still give him some overall limitations but his ability to orchestrate an offense may be second to none across the state. Morris wasn't much of a factor last year at The Patrick School but looks like he could be among the breakout juniors across the state while stepping into a leading role for a new-look Union Catholic team. He stands out with great positional size for a wing guard to go with smooth ball skills and slick footwork as a slasher. His slinky athleticism easily catches the eye and Morris also looked comfortable spacing the floor off the catch from beyond the arc. There appears to be real upside left for Morris to tap into as he continues getting acclimated to a new environment at UC. Mackintosh showed glimpses of his potential last season in a reserve role but looks like he could be among the more improved bigs in the state as a junior. He looks to have added an inch or two to his frame while blossoming into a true two-way presence in the paint. He plays for multiple efforts on the glass, shows soft hands and finishing touch around the basket, and is starting to extend his touch out to the perimeter as a floor-spacer from a standstill. His rim protection is also a consistent factor on the defensive end. Mackintosh thrives while keeping the game simple, with his size and consistent rate of improvement giving him a strong chance to wind up on scholarship radars in the future. With the amount of turnover at WesTech on the heels of last season's sectional championship, Andre looks like a safe bet to make one of the bigger statistical jumps of any guard in the state. A complementary piece a year ago, he's being thrust into a marquee role and impressed on Saturday with his energy in the floor game and ability to touch the paint on command. Well-built with good size and sudden burst, he routinely left defenders in the dust with a vicious left-to-right crossover and an ability to effectively vary his dribble cadence. He really gets into the ball on the defensive end with quick feet and a strong chest, playing with a consistently high motor overall despite the amount of offensive responsibility on his plate. His game is still a bit rough around the edges but the scholarship-level potential is very real as he refines with added experience.
